Marine Biological Laboratory Manager, Env. Serv. in Woods Hole, Massachusetts



  • Manage the daily activities of the Residential and Commercial sides of the Environmental Services department to include

  • Office space, laboratory space, housing space, meeting space, bathrooms, and public space cleaning

  • Set up of meeting space and public spaces for Conference/Meeting needs, coordinating with other departments as needed

  • Daily supervision of the Environmental Services staff; which includes all EVS FTE employees, and seasonal/temporary employees.

  • Planning, organizing and directing team members to ensure the highest degree of quality in cleaning the MBL facilities

  • Instruct employees in approved cleaning practices and methods; oversees the training and supervision of employees performing cleaning Train staff in best cleaning practices and customer service skills to provide a quality and effective service to MBL.

  • Uphold the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and

  • Evaluates the performance of the Environmental Services staff through frequent building inspections against established standards and counsels them on Performs annual performance evaluations.

  • Provide financial management for the department, inventory and supply maintenance, determining usage and equipment maintenance. Develop and monitor annual operating and capital improvement budgets with the Director of Facilities. Propose the most cost-effective cleaning processes and equipment.

  • Purchase, re-order and maintain cleaning supplies, inventory and equipment with assistance from Environmental Services Supervisor. Keep records of usage of supplies Ensures the proper maintenance of all equipment; decides whether repair and/or replacement of damaged equipment is necessary.

  • Hire, train, and manage both year-round and seasonal staff for the Environmental Services Department. Discipline and terminate employment of staff as needed, with guidance from Director of Facilities and Human Resources.

  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures related to material recycling

  • Knowledge of OSHA and safety standards within the Environmental Services Department

  • Determines and maintains the department work schedule used to notify staff of upcoming courses, conference and

  • Personally, provide backup support for Environmental Services staff as

  • Member of the MBL Storm and Snow Removal Team, taking direction form the storm In the absence of the Snow Team Manager assume Snow Team Manager’s responsibilities during snow event.

  • Essential 1 Personnel for emergency response

  • Contractor/Vendor management (ie: Mold Remediation, Integrated Pest Management)

  • Implement departmental objectives that align with the organization’s strategic plans as it pertains to growth and expansion.

  • Maintain good relations with staff, guests and employees served.

  • Performs other related work as

Skills Required: Must have strong knowledge of cleaning processes and procedures. Must have excellent organizational and analytical skills. Capable of using independent judgment/solid decision-making skills. Must be able to manage multiple and competing priorities. Must be self-motivated, flexible, and an excellent communicator. Must be able to work successfully in a team environment. Must be flexible with working nights, weekends, and holidays if needed.


Must have a minimum of a High School Diploma, college degree preferred. Previous custodial or housekeeping supervisory experience required with experience in scheduling and prioritizing staff and work flow. Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver's License with favorable driving record and/or be able to obtain a Massachusetts Driver's license within 60 days of hire date.

Other Responsibilities:

Must have the ability to read labels and follow written instructions for safe chemical use and handling, etc.

Employee must obtain a DOC identification badge after completion of proper background check in accordance with current DOC security requirements. Employee security clearance shall be in accordance with CAR 1352.237-72 Security Processing Requirements-Low Risk Contracts. Security clearance to be obtained within 60 days of hire.

Physical Requirements:

Physical effort requires walking, stooping and bending, climb or descend multiple flights of stairs; occasional lifting of objects (up to 50 pounds); lift and carry assorted job-related items. Work with standard cleaning chemicals including harsh chemicals, occasional exposure to dust and fumes. Use of step ladders up to 10 ' high.
