The Active Perception Assistant Group Leader is key role providing support and vision for developing new technologies in the area of perception and autonomy. The active Perception Team consists of 8 to 15 very talented researchers and engineers with a breadth of specialties in machine vision, sensor fusion, software and hardware design and implementation, UxV prototyping, and cutting development of Active Perception technologies from neuromorphics to scene analysis. The position supports the Group Leader in leading teams and mentoring/growing staff, as well as directing technology development and new research areas in their own right. The Active Perception group is centered on edge computing for UxV platforms including small ground and air vehicles, creating taskable autonomy stacks, and developing new approaches to smart sensing technologies. The assistant group leader will need to be able to develop, support, and lead proposal efforts for DoD programs, with help from SSCI support staff, and PI or PM programs of interest. The position offers the freedom to develop new technology and follow the technology from inception to transition to product within the company, with significant customer facing role. The position bridges technical development and management, with a significant technical role developing new concepts. It is a career growth position for those with strong technical backgrounds looking to have a larger leadership and management role.
PhD or MS +6 years experience in relevant technology area (machine vision, autonomy, sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, machine learning etc.).
3 years experience in DoD related work
Experience with Machine Vision; optical flow, visual inertial odometry, scene matching, or similar
Demonstrated capability in proposal writing (SBIR/STTR phase I and II, or BAA )
Experience working DARPA or Other DoD programs (> $1 million/ per year)
Experience leading teams of researchers and engineers (> 3-5 team members)
Strong communication and presentation skills (written and verbal) required
SBIR/STTR experience is a plus
Machine vision experience in visual navigation, stereo vision techniques, and reactive obstacle avoidance
Strong software skills and familiarity with C++, Python, ROS, a plus
A strong estimation background with Kalman or particle filters is highly desired
Background with UAVs highly desired
