The Sales Engineer will support the “Precision Optics” division of Materion. They will act as a direct interface with an assigned point of contact for new and existing customers to price and sell thin-film coating optical solutions that satisfy the customer’s specific optical filter needs. This position will be primarily dedicated to the support and promotion of products in the Space, Science and Astronomy (SSA) market segment. This is a technical sales and estimating role that will require the ability to read and understand customer prints and requirements, have technical conversations regarding the achievable performance and concessions and to translate Materion technical offerings to the customer for products in the SSA market. The applicant will be expected to work effectively with internal cross functional teams and act in direct support to the customer for account management, cost estimation, technical exchange, quotations, proposals, project management of new products and other product related tasks such as but not limited to delivery status, quality concerns and customer complaints.

You Will Have the Opportunity to:

  • ​ Work directly with the customer and collaborate with product engineering and other development teams to understand the needs of the customer

  • Manage key customer accounts within the Space, Science and Astronomy (SSA) business unit which may involve providing delivery updates, purchase order review and approval, quote follow up and project management

  • Handle most of the contract negotiations and if an order is realized, perform part set-up within the ERP system and initiate contract review

  • Manage multiple projects of different size and complexity at different stages in the development and production lifecycle and communicate the customers' requirements to the Company for engineering and production purposes.

  • Solve customer problems through interface with technical service, operations, and quality assurance

  • Act as the lead on conference calls with current and prospective customers

  • Participate in market strategy as well as expected order forecasting, sales and revenue planning

  • Provide engineering support to the customer to identify and resolve design issues or opportunities

  • Identify and contact assigned leads to determine sales opportunities.

  • Interface with customers on all quality issues and monitors corrections/improvements through to completion in conjunction with the quality team

  • Adhere to the customer program performance and requirements matrix, reporting format and frequency of reports, some are programmatic and technical in nature.

  • Present technical as well as project related information effectively and concisely to the customer in multiple settings

  • Represent the company at customer sites and trade shows, where applicable

  • Maintain compliance with internal procedures & government procurement regulations (ITAR / Export Control)

  • Work closely with existing customers and with other program/product managers to identify and develop New Business Opportunities (NBO)

  • Travel to customer locations as needed (10-15%)

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of science degree in an engineering discipline required

  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in thin film technology (PVD), sales, application engineering, program management and/or product engineering; or equivalent combination of education and industry related experience.

The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
