Summary

Responsibilities

The SCI Physician Assistant serves as a clinical expert in providing a full range of PA care to Veterans with spinal cord injury resulting in positive outcome/improvement in this patient population at the program or service level. The PA uses sound clinical judgement in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating care. The SCI Physician Assistant develops and implements a plan of care to meet individual patient or population specific needs, including self-care and rehabilitative measures and modifies approach based on knowledge of human behavior, motivations and reactions to situations. The PA conducts physical exams, takes medical histories, diagnoses and treats common acute illnesses or minor injuries, orders and interprets lab tests and x-rays, and counsels and educates Veterans with SCI. The PA makes recommendations for admissions, referrals or transfers to another level of care and coordinates management of patients. The PA acts as a consultant to nursing personnel, medical staff and other health care practitioners. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Financial Discloser Report: Not required This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office and dependent on available funding This position is a NAGE Bargaining Unit position.

This position is covered by a special rate.

Travel and relocation expenses are not authorized.

Selectee may be required to work at any Boston Healthcare System campus, as needed.

This position is in the Excepted Service.

Permanent appointment in this position is subject to review by the Professional Standards Board. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Drug Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. [Graduate of a training program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following: (1) Master's degree in any discipline; OR (2) Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.] Certification. [Must have successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE). NOTE: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is no longer required for employment in VHA. Licensure. PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State. Preferred Experience: Experience in Spinal Cord Injury; at least two years experience as a licensed Physician Assistant. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G8 Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over): Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted.
