Job Summary

We have an opportunity for a Manager to lead our Auto Modeling Actuarial team. Position can be at a higher level commensurate with experience.

Position is located in Webster MA/Boston MA or within a commutable distance preferred. Can be remote.

The team builds predictive models such as loss cost, retention, or conversion models. The focus of the team is on Personal Auto with the potential work on other property and casualty insurance products offered by MAPFRE Insurance.

The Manager, Actuarial is accountable for development of pricing models, in accordance with CAS (Casualty Actuarial Society) principles. Additionally, the Manager, must monitor the Actuarial Analyst and Actuary positions activities to ensure the timely and accurate completion of those models and related projects. The models will materially contribute to the overall performance of the actuarial area and the organization. The Manager will be accountable for ensuring that the models evolve to meet the changing needs of the organization. While much of the work to perform this evolution will be delegated, the Manager is accountable to ensure that the changes are made in a timely and accurate manner. The Manager will also convince both internal and external stakeholders of the correct actions to be taken as a result of the modeling analyses. If it is believed that foundational changes to existing processes will materially improve performance, the Manager will define the requirements, scope, and a plan to implement those changes. While managing the implementation, the Manager will be responsible for knowing the implications of the changes and being able to communicate them to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring a smooth transition.

As team members will require a significant amount of knowledge and skills to carry out the analyses, the Manager will provide training and/or other sources of knowledge (internal or external) as necessary. To the extent that team members have a desire to advance toward CAS credentials or a management position, the Manager should provide support and/or training as needed.

Knowledge and Technical Skills

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher

  • 8 – 10 years of experience with increasing responsibility in related roles

  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Thorough knowledge of either SAS or SQL

  • Thorough knowledge of insurance operations, accounting, and regulation

  • General knowledge of policy admin/claims adjustment processes

  • Extensive experience carrying out complicated quantitative analyses for insurance companies or similar organizations; preferably with products similar to MAPFRE’s

  • Experience building predictive models using GLMs

  • Experience with managing new and existing data sources, as well as building complex processes off of them from scratch

  • Thorough knowledge of applicable industry practices, standards, and concepts

  • Thorough knowledge of reinsurance and its implications on the area of focus

  • General knowledge of capital management and risk management

  • Ability to use these skills to modify existing processes or innovate new processes

Preferred:

ACAS credential or MBA

1-2 years of experience managing 1 or more actuarial employees

Experience with cloud-based platforms such as AWS

Experience with Emblem, Earnix, R, Radar, or Python
