American Institutes for Research Individual/Independent Consultant - Bias, Sensitivity, and Fairness Reviewers in Waltham, Massachusetts

Overview

Seeking Bias, Sensitivity, and Fairness Reviewers for a High-Stakes Standardized Assessment.AIR will contract directly with the Reviewer under a consulting purchase order agreement.

Established in 1946, with headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, AIR is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization that conducts behavioral and social science research and delivers technical assistance to solve some of the most urgent challenges in the U.S. and around the world. We advance evidence in the areas of education, health, the workforce, human services, and international development to create a better, more equitable world. The AIR family of organizations now includes IMPAQ, Maher & Maher, and Kimetrica.

Responsibilities

AIR is contracted by to develop the items and publish test forms for a high-stakes, nationally administered, high-stakes assessment. Developing test items is a long process that involves our internal content editors soliciting submissions from external technical writers, conducting multiple rounds of revisions to the items, and conducting rounds of technical, bias and sensitivity, and test development reviews before the items are available to be field tested and eventually become scored items. To support this process, AIR works with a cadre of writers and reviewers who are typically faculty at colleges and universities.

Currently, we are recruiting new consultants to support our Bias, Sensitivity, and Fairness Review process for scenarios and questions that test social science knowledge. This review is designed to ensure fairness in testing and that the test material does not contain language, symbols, or examples that might be interpreted differently by members of different examinee groups, or that might be offensive or emotionally disturbing to some examinees. Because our content editors work extremely hard to adhere to the test’s bias, sensitivity, and fairness requirements, it is very common that these reviews rarely yield any bias and sensitivity concerns.

AIR produces over 3000 items per year with at least two Bias and Sensitivity reviews per item. AIR will contract directly with the reviewer under a consulting purchase order agreement. The turnaround for review assignments is usually within 1–2 weeks. We retain several reviewers and keep them active throughout the year, shifting assignments to accommodate personal schedules.
