Baystate Health Supv Lab Processing - 40 hrs per week / 2nd shift in Springfield, Massachusetts
Summary:
This position is accountable for general supervision of the Central Processing staff involved in a variety of duties relating to registering, workflow, Coordinates and processing of specimens for laboratory testing at Central Processing- Core.
Reports directly to BRL, Manager, Central Processing and works in collaboration with all supervisory and technical staff in the Department of Pathology
Job Responsibilities:
1) Directs and supervises Central Processors involved in accessioning and processing of specimens, including evaluation, scheduling, orientation and training. Makes effective recommendations on employee hiring, transfer, promotion, termination, wage changes and disciplinary actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems in a timely manner within limits of position. Performs all functions related to payroll.
2) Directs Central Processing staff on multiple shifts, supervising the day to day functions of Central Processing performing the following functions: ensures tracking and prioritizing specimens according to protocol, processing and delivering specimens to the appropriate departments, handling/storing specimens as required, registering patients laboratory computer systems, ordering laboratory tests in Sunquest, using laboratory requisitions or electronic orders, labeling specimens with bar code labels, calling clients to troubleshoot issues as needed, completing Salesforce cases, entering SRS events, ensuring delivery of specimens to testing areas following guidelines for acceptability and priority, answering main lab phone and reporting patient test results by phone and fax.
3) Oversees troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of all department and other equipment or systems associated with Processing functions including the MPA or the 8100 pre analytic instrumentation. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and materials and assists with preview, selection and evaluation of new equipment and software.
4) Maintains safe work environment, observes all health and safety requirements and prepares and responds to accidents and unusual occurrences, reporting to appropriate manager.
5) Prepares, implements, maintains and updates Processing procedure manuals and assures compliance with all policies and procedures. Monitors, organizes and works to maintain efficient workflow, Coordinates data and statistics collection
6) Collaborates with In-Patient Phlebotomy, nursing staff, Client Services, Courier Services, lab computer room and all laboratory testing areas to expedite specimen transfer to testing areas.
7) Oversees orientation and training of affiliated students and contributes to development and implementation of in-service education programs for all lab assistants
8) Oversees Quality Assurance for Processing, reviews Performance Improvement logs and trend reports. Recommends and implements system changes and monitors improvements.
9) Promotes the BHS and BRL Mission and Vision and practices the BH values of trust, respect, integrity, communication and collaboration.
10) Participates in On Call Rotation
Required Work Experience:
1) 3 years experience in a clinical laboratory.

Skills and Competencies:
1) Technical knowledge and skills regarding principles and techniques of laboratory medicine as well as instrumentation.
2) Experience in a lead role; experience supervising staff desired.
3) Expertise in specimen receiving, handling and processing of specimens.
4) Knowledge of multiple systems including Salesforce, Sunquest, CIS, and Atlas desired.
5) Excellent customer service skills.
6) Performs troubleshooting and demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks.
