City of Springfield Senior Center Coordinator in Springfield, Massachusetts

Position Purpose/Summary Responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising a comprehensive program that will benefit the welfare of the elderly of the City of Springfield. Responsible for utilizing the multi-purpose senior center facility to meet recreational, educational, cultural, social, and economic needs of the elderly. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director of Elder Affairs. Supervision is exercised over other employees and/or assigned Senior Aides. Essential Functions Coordinates on-site programs such as fitness, health screening, nutrition, community education, and special events/trips Arranges congregate meal site which includes reservations, donations, supplies, set-up, serving and clean-up Screens inquiries from residents, evaluates needs, takes applications, and makes appointments/referrals Assists in budget preparation; adheres to allotted budget and authorizes expenditures, pays bills, prepares and submits monthly statistical reports Coordinates meetings by inviting residents, arranging speakers, and organizing refreshments Maintains records such as participant registration forms and statistical data/reports Uses printed materials and public appearances to inform the local community of activities Oversees senior aides by providing training and delegating duties as necessary Helps maintain building through spot cleaning and general daily upkeep Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to relate well with the elderly Ability to supervise others Extensive knowledge of social, cultural, and recreational needs of the elderly Considerable knowledge of the neighborhood, City, City departments, and agencies offering social services Education and Experience Associates degree in a related field and three (3) years experience in planning and coordinating services for seniors OR a high school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years experience in planning and coordinating senior services
