Primary Purpose of Position:

North Shore Community Health (NSCH) is an industry leader in exceptional delivery of community healthcare. Under the general direction of the VP of Value-Based Care and Informatics, the Director of Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology leads the Behavioral Health (BH) team at NSCH in building and executing a robust model of collaborative and integrative behavioral health

care that serves the specific needs of our communities. The Director of Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology is an essential partner in practicing integrated behavioral health in a multidisciplinary community health center. The Director of Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology effectively leads all behavioral health programs, including psychopharmacological services, and collaborates across service lines to ensure quality care, clinical and financial performance, risk management, staffing, safety, and excellent service of the BH department. The Director of Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology is responsible for building NSCH’s BH recruiting model and for developing and maintaining a clinical internship program for behavioral health professionals. The Director of Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology supervises all BH clinicians, psychopharmacological clinicians, and other BH/psychopharmacological staff such as medical assistants and case managers working in full-time NSCH sites. They will also work closely with and provide support to the School-Based BH clinicians. Additionally, the Director of Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology provides direct care to NSCH patients, the percentage of which is determined by the VP of Value-Based Care and Informatics and the CMO.

Essential Functions:

  • In collaboration with other key health center leaders and staff, leads the development and maintenance of a patient-centered, integrated model of behavioral health care for NSCH that includes both BH therapy and psychopharmacology (“psychopharm”).

  • Responsible for forming and leading multidisciplinary workgroups around BH integration or other BH-related improvements.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert around BH for the leadership team and other health center staff. Provides expert guidance/recommendations to leadership team members on the behavioral health model of care and BH programs and initiatives at the health center.

  • Determines the appropriate mix of individual and group therapy and ensures the ongoing availability of groups to meet patient behavioral health needs.

  • Provides behavioral health care to NSCH patients via telehealth and in-person at the clinic, the percentage of which will be determined by the VP of Value-Based Care and Informatics and CMO based on the needs of the health center.

  • Defines key performance indicators for the BH department, in collaboration with BH practice manager/operations team. Works with EMR/data/operations team to build BH dashboards. Continually assesses the extent to which our BH services are meeting the needs of our patients and works to address gaps accordingly.

  • Serves as the voice of the BH department – provides ongoing clear, consistent messaging to health center staff regarding key BH department information. This includes information relative to both internal and external BH resources.

  • Provides on-site support and interacts with staff members in-person at each of the clinical sites to raise awareness and ensure open communication on BH services.

  • Responsible for development of systems to foster effective communication and integration between staff who are co-located or who are working at different sites/remotely.

  • Serves as a liaison between the health center and other external organizations/key partners on all BH related matters.

  • Serves as a lead for BH on required internal and external meetings, including those held by our accountable care organization and our electronic health record partners.

  • Partners with our electronic health record team on system enhancements and customizations to improve efficiency and quality of BH care.

  • Provides hands-on management and mentorship of BH clinicians and additional team members on the BH and psychopharm teams (may include school-based BH clinicians).

  • Demonstrates superior oral and written communication skills with the BH team and across the organization. Ensures the completion and accessibility of written BH workflows/SOPs.

  • Ensures all BH providers and team members have adequate systems, supervision and support to provide high-quality care that meets the needs of our patients.

  • Monitors for opportunities to expand care for new services to our communities.

  • Engages team in NSCH’s performance management process. Manages staff performance, provides direction, training, and coaching; conducts performance evaluations; oversees the BH Peer review process.

  • Builds and maintains a robust recruiting system for BH and psychopharm providers at NSCH, including a BH internship program, through seeking out and maintaining collaborations with local educational programs for BH providers.

  • Provides guidance on career development and applies counseling, disciplinary, and corrective action programs to staff as needed.

  • Communicates with staff around productivity expectations and establishes plans for corrective actions as needed.

  • In partnership with the Operations team and the BH practice manager, assesses, establishes, and implements appropriate systems, procedures, and productivity standards for BH services to ensure excellent quality of services.

  • Responsible for ensuring effective processes and workflows around patient transitions of care/hospital and ED follow-up for patients seen for BH-related diagnoses.

  • Uses and implements Evidence-Based Best Practices across the BH team.

  • Ensures compliance with all internal quality and external licensing, certification, compliance, and accreditation standards and regulations, including those required to meet value-based care standards for the health center.

  • Establishes and monitors the department’s annual operating budget and provider productivity. Provides recommendations to the leadership team around productivity expectations.

  • Ensures the ongoing quality and timely completion of all BH and psychopharm clinical documentation.

  • Maintains an effective working relationship with clinical and non-clinical staff

  • Adheres to HIPAA rules, including maintaining strict patient confidentiality.

  • Attends/complete all required training and participate in meetings as required

  • Performs additional duties as requested to fulfill NSCH’s mission

Requirements:

  • Licensed as a BH clinician with a current Massachusetts license

  • At least 5 years' direct patient care experience and at least three years of administrative management experience.

  • Superior oral and written communication skills

  • Experience in a patient-centered medical home and/or value-based care model with integrated behavioral health

  • Experience in Integrated Behavioral Health and Psychopharmacology collaboration

  • Experience with psychopharmacology models of care within an FQHC setting strongly preferred.

  • Strong commitment to providing treatment that is compassionate and competent.

  • Strong EMR skills – experience with Epic a plus.

  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams strongly preferred

  • Experience developing and managing a departmental budget strongly preferred.

  • Experience in creation or participating in graduate clinical internship and training programs

  • Ability to successfully collaborate with multidisciplinary team in a primary care setting

  • Experience working in a diverse environment providing culturally competent services

Physical Requirements:

This job is inherently sedentary, necessitating the ability to remain seated or standing for extended durations, while also utilizing computers and phones. There may be a requirement to travel to multiple locations throughout the day.
