Since 2003, Aspen has been developing a new carbon-based aerogel platform which is electrically conductive, mechanically robust and exhibits a unique porous nanostructure that allows it to host a variety of challenging battery material systems. Auto manufacturer roadmaps require new material innovation in order to increase the energy density of lithium ion batteries and extend electric vehicle drive range. Despite this, very few material innovations have reached production levels due to the challenges of reliably and safely incorporating new electrochemically active material systems. Aspen believes it has an answer that will dramatically change industry roadmaps and create enormous value for our business.

Summary: Aspen Aerogels offers the opportunity to join the early growth stage of the Aspen Battery Materials group as a Polymer Materials Engineer at its headquarters in Northborough, MA. The position is responsible for developing, validating, and implementing polymer systems as they relate to our battery materials development effort. The responsibilities of this role will require knowledge of materials science and/or chemistry combined with strong hands-on bench and pre-pilot skills. The successful candidate will be an integral member of our team, a self-starter and co-inventor, and will coordinate with other researchers and engineers within the ABM group. As a growing business unit within Aspen Aerogels, this position features opportunity for upward mobility.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct lab-scale experiments related to coatings, surface chemistry, emulsions and polymer synthesis

  • Provide polymer solutions for battery materials development – material selection, validation and implementation

  • Characterize materials developed to support application

  • Implement new material solutions at pre-pilot scale

  • Work independently and with other scientists and engineers to lead projects, prioritize experiments, troubleshoot issues and drive results to completion

  • Effectively communicate outcomes and data to the team to facilitate decision making.

  • Abide by all safety controls, PPE requirements and SOPs

  • Adopt and follow Aspen’s core values of Safety, Quality, Integrity, Teamwork, Customer and Innovation on both a personal and professional level

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Masters or doctorate degree in polymers, chemistry or materials engineering

  • Fundamental knowledge of polymer chemistry and coatings

  • 3-10 years of industrial experience

  • Experience with battery or electronic materials development

  • Experience increasing scale of material solutions

  • Knowledge of chemical and materials science related characterization techniques

  • Demonstrate superior communication skills to deliver engaging, informative and well-organized presentations.

  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and find solutions

  • Ability to take initiative, employ good judgment, and manage projects from beginning to end

  • Must be able to work independently and with a team

  • Must be able to work in fast-paced setting and multi-task

  • Strong computer skills (MS Office, statistical analysis, database and design software)
