Amazon Sr. Software Development Engineer, Amazon Robotics (AR) in North Reading, Massachusetts
Description
We are building a new, foundational automation system which will transform warehouse operations by combining multiple novel workcells. We are seeking experienced Senior Software (firmware) Development Engineer to take a leading role in optimizing, deploying, and enhancing a fleet of robotics systems. Ideal candidate will be experienced in robotic path planning, motion control and computer vision. They are passionate about software development and has a track record of designing and implementing new products and features using cloud technologies ( preferably AWS) and software deployed at the edge. They have designed and architected solutions deployed at scale in live environments. They are a hands-on expert, with a deep and broad understanding of software tools and complex algorithm development.
Key job responsibilities
Lead Design and Development: Architect, develop, and maintain high-performance software that powers advanced manipulation, planning, and control tasks on robotic systems in dynamic environments.
Work with cross-functional teams—including hardware engineers, software developers, and operations personnel—to develop integrated solutions and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
Handle Complexities and Edge Cases: Architect and implement software systems that effectively manage the chaos and edge cases inherent in real-world robotics applications.
Integrate, troubleshoot the robotic system with multiple other solutions and help build an optimal planner and orchestration for the movement of the system.
Enhance Observability Tools: Create and improve monitoring and observability tools for tracking, debugging, and learning across global deployments.
Mentorship and Leadership: Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership to the team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Integration and Validation: Integrate, test, and validate new features on live systems, ensuring they meet stringent performance and reliability standards.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with experts across disciplines—including perception, hardware, and software—to create intelligent, integrated systems and solutions.
15-20% travel expected to support onsite system testing

Basic Qualifications
5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
4+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
4+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- Proficiency in at least one modern object oriented language such as Java (. preferred ), C++, or C#
- Proficiency in system design using cloud technologies (preferably AWS)
Preferred Qualifications
2+ years of experience creating software which controls robots or other industrial automation equipment
Experience in low-level firmware architecture, design and development, preferably for motion control
Knowledge of Linux kernel and device-driver development
Familiarity with common bus protocols such as Modbus, CAN bus, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, etc.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $151,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
