Under the direction of the Manager of Interpreter Services, the Interpreter provides interpreter/translation services throughout the facility for patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) and/or who are Blind, Deaf or Hard of Hearing, and provides a supportive role for affiliated medical staff offices.

Job Description:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provides in-person medical level translation/interpretation and navigation of services as necessary to LEP patients in all hospital settings and, as directed by the Manager of Interpreter Services, to affiliated medical staff offices and clinics.

  • Adheres to all hospital policies associated with interpreter services.

  • Maintains and improves expertise through the completion of appropriate continuing education.

  • Facilitates providing documents/references related to Interpreter Servicees and Culture/Ethnic sensitivity.

  • Contributes to ongoing process improvement for the department.

  • Consistently demonstrates the expectations identified in the organization’s mission stat4ement as well as the hospital’s vision and goals.

  • Complies with the BID Milton’s Code of Conduct and performance standards relating to service excellence.

  • The nature of tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control.

  • Adheres to Universal Precautions.

  • Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules and regulation as set forth by appropriate regulatory and government agencies and in accordance with established department and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Maintains competencies (position specific and hospital wide) required for the specific patient populations served.

  • May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on a temporary or emergency basis or as designated by the department manager.

QUALIFICATIONS :

PREFERED EDUCATION: High School/GED certificate required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Qualified as Medical Interpreter; National certification, part I or part II preferred. Formal medical interpreter training preferred.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 1-3 years related work experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.

OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Fluent in English and second language, at a level that ensures accurate and understandable interpretation and translation.

  • strong medical vocabulary (including vocabulary of medical specialties, to interpret for our medical specialties clinic)

  • Ability to provide effective writtena dn oral communication at a level required for this position

  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, family members, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to maintain calm in stressful situations.

  • Proactive adaptable and flexible in dealing with patients, medical staff and employees with diverse needs.

  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based and Microsoft applications.
