To work collaboratively with the assigned legal counsel and other staff in Legal Services Division to provide support and perform immigration tasks requiring some independent judgment.

This is an advanced management immigration specialist where the incumbent is expected to have extensive knowledge and experience performing immigration related tasks. Upon gaining additional experience and responsibility, the incumbent may prepare to take on the role of a more advanced paralegal. A supervisor / manager directs work to the incumbent. Guidance and feedback will also be given by assigned attorney from the Legal Services Division in support of immigration tasks.


Technical/Professional Knowledge:

  • Demonstrate ability to start, control/conclude complex job tasks and prioritize workload.

  • Identify and recommend job tasks.

  • Possess discipline specific expertise.

  • Stay current with developments and trends relative to discipline-specific information.

  • Use established processes, equipment and/or programs to complete job tasks, recommend process improvements/solutions, and audit, control and/or maintain the processes and procedures in one’s discipline and modifies when appropriate.

  • Locate and interpret detailed information from various resources.Proficient in creating and presenting verbal and written communications in a variety of communication settings.

  • Maintain working relationship with client and outside counsel and anticipate client needs in order to improve delivery of legal services and support corporate objectives.

  • Identify complex issues and make detailed and appropriate recommendations to resolve them.

  • Elicit respect and confidence from work group.

Decision Making/Analysis:

  • Make a high volume of timely and appropriate difficult decisions with moderate risk.

  • Effectively identify and engage individuals who possess appropriate skills, abilities or knowledge as needed to effectuate decisions.

  • Use a variety of analytical tools and/or techniques to obtain relevant information.


  • Work independently with review only at the completion of tasks.

  • Act quickly, delegating appropriate resources effectively to complete high-risk job tasks in short timeframes.

  • Provide leadership in team meetings or work sessions.

  • Ability to direct and critique the work and train other immigration specialists.

  • Assist work group in establishing goals and devising strategy for achieving goals.

  • Suggest detailed improvements to meet goals and improve inefficiencies in work procedures within one’s job tasks or immediate work area.

  • Effectively engage a network of employees and/or other human resources to complete job tasks with limited resources or when job tasks require a high volume of resources.

  • Willing to take firm stance on difficult or unpopular issues.

Job Duties

  • List jobInterpret and apply complex governmental (administrative) rules.

  • Prepare applications for action by governmental agencies by applying complex rules and departmental processes.

  • Ensure Caterpillar rights are protected by monitoring data bases and compliance/audit reports.

  • Revise documents to meet rules of government agencies by applying complex rules and departmental processes.

  • Conduct legal research and case analysis.

  • Participate in and/or conduct witness interviews and factual discovery.

  • Meet and interview clients, including responding to client questions.

  • Draft general correspondence and/or discovery responses.

  • Monitor, analyze, and comment on new regulations or cases.

  • Monitor case development.

  • Perform case management under limited attorney supervision.

  • Act as a company representative in mediations/arbitrations, and provide support at trials.

  • Interact as necessary with outside counsel and opposing counsel, direct work of outside counsel.

  • Prepare memoranda and law updates for review based on research from statutes, judicial decisions, law articles and regulations.

  • Prepare reports and make presentations on regulatory developments.

  • Monitor, analyze and comment on new regulations or cases.

  • Prepare Caterpillar’s periodic compliance reports.

  • Formulate Caterpillar’s compliance requirements.

  • Organize and manage voluminous documents for a variety of tasks and to prepare detailed summaries of documents.

  • Handle complex corporate governance.

  • Prepare complex agreements and amendments for attorney review and negotiate and agree to changes.

  • Review client proposals and presentations and provide training or presentations to non-attorneys on specific legal issues or policies.

Employee may also be responsible for performing other job duties occasionally as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4 year degree completed

  • 5 years job-related experience
