Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of the Clinical Call Center Pharmacy and the immediate supervision of the Ambulatory Pharmacists, and within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures, the Specialty Pharmacy Liaison performs various non-judgmental aspects of pharmaceutical care in an ambulatory pharmacy setting. This position acts as a liaison between the specialty/retail pharmacy and the prescribers to document, submit, communicate outcomes and appeal if necessary all pharmacy/medical prior authorizations. Is also involved in all aspects of obtaining patient access to prescribed medication. The Specialty Pharmacy Liaison is a unique role that provides integrated support to patients and pharmacists by providing a ‘hands-on’ approach to total quality patient care. The Specialty Pharmacy Liaison works closely with patients to deliver a full continuum of medication adherence support by utilizing CHA’s various tools and applications. Encourages patients of clinics to utilize CHA pharmacy to fully benefit from its superior patient care services. The Specialty Pharmacy Liaison will be integrated with the clinic team (doctors, nurses, staff, etc.) which is critical to the liaison’s success.

Responsibilities:

• Accurately creates/maintains a patient profile of health- and insurance-related information in the pharmacy computer system.

• Accurately registers patients as required and enters prescription orders into the computer systems.

• Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

• Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

• Assists Ambulatory Pharmacists in filling prescription orders, compounding various non-sterile products, dispensing prescriptions and making the offer to counsel.

• Assists Ambulatory Pharmacists in handling phone calls from patients and health care providers.

• Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.

• Accurately and safely handles cash received from patients. Maintains appropriate records.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in written English with internal and external customers.

• Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Supervisor/manager monitors work progress.

• Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.

• Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.

• Flexibility to adapt to changes in the departmental needs including but not limited to: offering assistance to other team members, adjusting assignments, etc.

Qualifications:

Education:High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate is required; AD or BA is preferred

Work experience:Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications, which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Specialty Pharmacy experience and/or prior authorization experience is preferred.

Licensure: License Massachusetts Registered Pharmacy Tech required.

Registration:Must have a current pharmacy technician registration in good standing from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy or be eligible for registration in MA. In lieu of an active MA registration, candidates must register prior to working 1000 hours at the Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA). Failure to register within this time period will result in the discontinuation of employment at CHA.

Certification: Completion of a Board of Pharmacy approved certifying body pharmacy technician certification examination is preferred. 3-5 years related work experience required in Pharmacy.
