The Tactical Defense Systems Group works to find the best ways to protect U.S. Air Force vehicles. We study vulnerability to radar and infrared sensors as well as novel sensing modalities. The group focuses on understanding threats through tests and measurements. Test activities include flight, field, and laboratory testing. The group operates two highly instrumented airplanes and numerous ground systems. We prototype advanced sensor concepts and add instrumentation to existing sensors. The group provides answers to survivability questions from our Air Force sponsors by conducting field measurements, analyzing data, and comparing the results to modeling and simulation. We recommend investments in future USAF systems and present our advice to high-level decision makers in the DoD.
