Our Novo Nordisk US Research & Development Hub, located in the Greater Boston area, brings together the best talent to drive life science innovation. Located in Lexington, Watertown, Cambridge, and Waltham, our teams reflect the full scope of research and early development (R&ED). You will join the Software Products Department, within the Digital Science and Innovation (DSI) area, enabling Novo Nordisk R&ED researchers and laboratories with digital solutions to take the best data-driven decision. We are designing, creating, maintaining, and continuously refining globally deployed, high-impact scientific digital solutions that constitute an integrated and intuitive digital product landscape that accelerates data-driven research to enable Novo Nordisk's next big breakthroughs. In partnership with R&ED, we are investing in a data-driven and innovative culture to create better medicines for millions of patients worldwide. Within the Software Products Department, the Product Support & Training team consists of digital experts with deep knowledge of our digital landscape (from entity registration systems and sample inventories, to electronic lab notebooks and further data capturing & management systems) and diverse competencies and experiences. The team members competencies are essential to constantly improve and mature software solutions and ensure their seamless operation to accelerate digitalization across R&ED. The Position

The Senior Specialist - Scientific Digital Solutions will be an individual contributor responsible for supporting R&ED scientists at our research sites in the Greater Boston area with lab informatics solutions by either introducing / leveraging global research informatics tools that you configure for local needs or by creating and maintaining targeted digital applications. As an expert in our research IT landscape, the Senior Specialist – Scientific will play a pivotal role in all phases of the digital solution lifecycle (ideation, development, configuration/adaptation, testing, roll-out, maintaining, out-phasing) to help R&ED scientists to reach their research goals by applying industry best practices. As recognized expert within pre-clinical data management, the Senior Specialist - Scientific Digital Solutions will stay in close contact with relevant R&ED stakeholders and works independently to identify and translate R&ED digital needs into requirements for the (to-be-built) digital solution(s)/product(s) keeping FAIR principles and the overall R&ED strategy in mind. The Senior Specialist - Scientific Digital Solutions ensures the appropriate implementation of requirements by working across various stakeholder groups. Moreover, the creation of targeted user documentation and persona-specific training material as well as delivering training activities to facilitate the efficient usage of scientific digital solutions/products are responsibilities of the Senior Specialist - Scientific Digital Solutions as well. Open to hiring at a more senior title commensurate with the required experience.

Relationships

The Senior Specialist - Scientific Digital Solutions will report to a member of Scientific Data Registration management team. Internal partners include therapeutic area scientists, computational biologists, data and software engineers, software developers, platform and compute engineers in R&ED and IT. External relationships include relationships with commercial and academic collaboration partners.

Essential Functions

  • Manages or performs work associated with diverse digital technologies, architectures, and problem domains such as requirement analysis/engineering, (R&ED) user support, documentation / training material creation, design/implementation/configuration/maintenance/operation of digital solutions/products by internal staff, outsourcing staff, or consultant

  • Manages or performs work associated with analysis, design, implementation, operation, deployment, and support of the scientific digital solutions/products by internal staff, outsourcing staff, or consultants

  • Activities include (co-)developing scientific digital solutions strategies while keeping FAIR principles and the overall R&ED strategy in mind, analyzing and supporting scientific data workflows, documentation / training material creation, delivering training sessions, and supporting R&ED users to leverage scientific digital tools

  • Responds to and diagnoses problems through discussion with R&ED scientists (users), which includes trouble shooting, fault rectification and timely problem resolution/escalation

  • Assists in scientific software evaluation and recommendations to upgrade or improve the scientific IT landscape

  • Have knowledge on business impact and understanding of diverse data and technologies in complex and highly critical scientific solutions

    Physical Requirements

    up to 20% overnight travel required.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Degree within Life Sciences (Biology/Chemistry), Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Computational Biology/Chemistry, Physics, or other relevant areas

  • 5+ years of relevant experience or master’s degree with 3+ years relevant experience

  • Relevant experience includes:

  • Experience in working with implementation, integration, configuration of digital scientific solutions required. Experience within pharma or biotech preferred

  • Technical understanding of databases (implementation of data models, query construction, integration tasks, and ETL operations)

  • Experience with at least one programming/scripting languages and programmatic interfaces (APIs)e.g., Python, R, or similar, to be able to transform / analyze various scientific data

  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical research IT domain & vendor landscape and broad expertise ranging from research data management to scientific digital solutions, including the ability to perform hands on technical work

  • Preferred experience includes:

  • Experience in handling (various) scientific data types

  • Experience with scientific software development procedures (version control, testing, DevOps, etc.) preferred

  • Ability to work independently and in teams, and to collaborate with external parties

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Relevant technical knowledge and experience to configure / administer / maintain (vendor or home-built) digital solutions
