Are you an expert in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry? We need you on our team! Our Lexington Biotech and Analysis team is seeking a Scientist with expertise in mass spectrometry to support the development of innovative nutritional products in our dynamic and collaborative R&D environment. Come leverage your expertise in mass spectrometry and analytical chemistry to enhance analytical workflows and methods for small molecule analysis in complex matrices, metabolomics for animal microbiome studies, and high-throughput automated solutions.

You will closely collaborate with our microbial biotechnology and microbiome teams to investigate biosynthetic and biological pathways, identify key biomarkers, and provide deeper project insights. Acting as a technical leader and strategic liaison among various departments, you are responsible to translate scientific findings into reliable and healthy nutritional solutions, creating significant value for dsm-firmenich through scientifically proven food ingredients.

This position is eligible for the dsm -firmenich Hybrid Working model, spending 3-4 days per week in the Lexington, MA office and the balance of the work week in a home office. You must reside in a geography that is commutable to Lexington, MA.

Your key responsibilities

  • Develop, improve, and implement advanced analytical methods for determining the composition of complex microbial biomass matrices and biospecimens such as blood, serum, and feces.

  • Develop procedures for extracting and analyzing intra- and extra-cellular metabolites from microbial and biospecimen samples using targeted and untargeted LC and mass spectrometry.

  • Investigate metabolites based on biological pathways for additional insights and biomarker identification, and develop metabolomics workflows to support multiple project targets.

  • Independently generate technical hypotheses to conceive of, perform, and guide analytical support for a variety of research projects/activities.

  • Drive discovery in analytics for new approaches and instrumentation, advancing analytical competencies, and accelerating innovation projects. Bring analytical insights into cross-functional and global project teams for the development of new microbial biotechnology processes.

  • Provide scientific mentorship for junior colleagues regarding sample preparation, LC, and LC-MS analysis techniques to achieve shared research goals. Develop rigorous experiments, analyze, interpret, and present study results and conclusions in cross-functional and project meetings. Coordinate and facilitate analysis from external laboratories or universities and support data interpretation for relevant project teams.

You bring

  • Hands-on experience in analytical chemistry, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, along with technical leadership in mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), preferably with Thermo Q-Exactive

  • Experience utilizing chemometric software and the ability to convert large datasets into key insights using software solutions and statistical tools (e.g., Python, R-programming)

  • Proven ability to translate scientific data into actionable insights and act as an analytical scientific expert in discussions on science and project progression. Experience with microbiome workflows is preferred

  • Strategic thinker with a drive for creating a positive and engaging team dynamic, translating ideas into practical advances, and developing the vision for leveraging technologies

  • Master's degree plus minimum 5 years of industry experience or Ph.D. with minimum 2 years of industrial experience in Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related field
