State of Massachusetts Motor Equipment Mechanic III in Lenox, Massachusetts

Position Summary Performs the tasks of a journeyman mechanic technician in diagnosing the causes of malfunctions and in repairing and maintaining automotive and construction equipment and attachments. Repair and maintain gas and diesel engines, generators, motors and other mechanical and electrical components of stationary or mobile power-driven equipment. Duties and Responsibilities * Diagnoses the cause of faulty mechanical performance on gasoline and diesel engines and estimates the extent of needed repairs on gasoline and similar powered equipment such as passenger vehicles, trucks, and MassDOT equipment. * Troubleshoot and road test motor vehicles and equipment such as automobiles, trucks, buses, bulldozers, cranes and snowblowers to determine the repair work needed to be done. * Road test motor vehicles and recommend them for road use. * Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, overhaul and adjustment of mechanical structural hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic components of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment with the use of appropriate test equipment and hand and power tools. * Work to be performed in the depot garage or in the field. * Maintains, repairs and performs diagnostic functions on ignition systems, switches, generators, charging systems, air conditioning systems, starting motors and electrical systems on all types of motorized equipment. * Maintains, repairs, adjusts and replaces elements of chassis assembly including frames, springs, steering, dump bodies, brakes (air, mechanical and hydraulic), and hydraulic lifts, drives and controls; balances wheels; mounts, dismounts, services and repairs tires of all types of sizes on aII types of motorized equipment. * Performs body and fender work on all types of equipment including restoring, scraping, treating and spray painting of metal surfaces, removes, replaces or repairs glass doors. * Repairs and maintains radiators, cooling systems and engines, on gasoline and diesel engines. * Repairs and service all transmissions, transfer cases and torque converters in all equipment. * Performs skilled torch cutting of metal parts and equipment. * Periodically checks all mechanical equipment in conformance with maintenance schedules and performs all necessary servicing operations such as inspecting steering mechanism, hand brake, exhaust system, fan belt, generator circuit, etc. * Obtains parts and supplies from stockroom. * Must be available for scheduled overtime work and overtime work during snow and ice operations and emergency conditions. Substitutions I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at the high school level or above, with a major in automotive shop practice may be substitution for one year of the required (A) experience.
