About the Job

Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager and within established clinic and departmental policies and procedures, performs client interpreting and scheduling functions as determined by business needs. Interprets for clients and families with limited or no English language proficiency in their interactions with care providers and other clinic personnel.

The Interpreter's Responsibilities are:

  • Interprets for clients and guardians with limited or no English language proficiency in their interactions with care providers and other clinic personnel.

  • Translates complex and/or sensitive behavioral health and personal information including but not limited to treatment and discharge plans, prescriptions and medical, social and psychological assessments. Provide translation of simple documents and letters.

  • Assists clients in scheduling appointments, resolving billing problems and other related matters.

  • Identifies, assesses and facilitates understanding of cultural differences impacting communication. Focus on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards in Health and Healthcare which include: equitable care for all individuals, support reduction in health disparities, support services that align with the needs of the individuals served, require communication assistance, promote accessibility and non discriminatory practices.

  • Prepares written translations of individual client instructions as well as translates other hospital literature for clients as instructed by the Supervisor

  • Provides education and training to staff on subjects such as working effectively with an interpreter and cross cultural communication as needed. Assists in development, preparation and presentation of training materials.

  • Maintains records of daily activities.

  • Works as a team with staff within the clinic.

  • Maintains computerized records of daily activities, including diary of daily patient transactions, statistics and details of encounters.

  • Maintains professional competency through participation in professional organizations, attendance at conferences, seminars and other continuing education programs and through independent study yearly.


  • Bachelor Degree preferred or equivalent. Health Care Interpreter Training Certificate

  • Preferred National Certification for Healthcare Interpreters (for available languages)

  • Experience in interpretation and translation in a healthcare setting preferred

  • Fluency in oral and written in both, target and source languages. Knowledge of healthcare policies, interpreters Standard of Practice and Ethics. Consecutive, simultaneous and sight interpreting. Ability to keep data collection and to maintain formal documentation systems. Enthusiastic and high sense of teamwork. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    Schedule: Full time, 40 hours per week
