SCHEDULE: 40 hours, Sunday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., including weekend and evening coverage as needed

Pays $28.85 per hour



The Substance Abuse Clinician will provide quality substance abuse counseling services according to the program-s established policies and procedures. The Substance Abuse Clinician accepts assigned program participants and, conducts bio-psycho-social assessments for use in treatment planning and aftercare referrals. The incumbent conducts individual and group sessions and participates in the development of group content. The Substance Abuse Clinician works closely with intake case manager and aftercare coordinator to assist in discharge planning and placement including the development of community supports. The Substance Abuse Clinician is expected to accurately complete all required documentation within CareLogic (the electronic health record), to ensure the client electronic clinical record is complete, and to keep client progress notes up-to-date at all times. The incumbent will assist in crisis prevention/intervention and milieu management. The Substance Abuse Clinician works to obtain or maintain clinical credentials and/or licensure by receiving supervision and attending training opportunities.



  • Masters in social work, counseling, psychology or mental health and a minimum of one year of supervised substance abuse experience

Please note - All credentials and licensures will be reviewed annually as part of the PSI credentialing process. Additionally an annual CORI review will be conducted for the Clinical Supervisor. Acceptable results of annual credentialing and CORI reviews will be required of the Clinical Supervisor.


  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervised substance abuse experience

  • Extensive and demonstrated knowledge of substance abuse, group process, homeless issues and community resources, including HIV/AIDS and mental health

  • Experience in completing assessment and individual and group therapy to adults with addictive and mental health disorders

  • Experience with facilitating didactic and cognitive groups

  • Knowledge of developmental stages through the life span and gender specific issues

  • Knowledge of or willingness to use Motivational Interviewing techniques

  • Knowledge or experience working with self-help programs

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to manage high volume of client related paperwork

  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Data base and Outlook

  • Demonstrate ability to organize and manage a heavy workload.

  • Experience communicating with 3rd party payors regarding insurance re-authorizations.

  • Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing techniques and knowledge of Trauma -Informed Care practices

  • Experience working in a behavioral health organization with managed care contracts

  • Experience utilizing electronic health record documentation systems


  • Contributes to the overall integration and success of the program by being a team player, accepting and offering guidance as appropriate, participating in PSI activities and trainings as requested, and by promoting organizational integration based on the mission, vision and values.

  • Accepts responsibility as a team player by being sensitive to the effects of job performance, office behavior, and participation in staff meetings on the ability of the team to meet its goals. Shall comply with occupational and health standards and all rules, regulations, and guidelines issued by Pine Street Inn and by OSHA which are applicable to his/her actions and conduct. Accepts supervision and guidance and actively participates in efforts to improve quality of performance. Is flexible when asked to perform other tasks as requested. Dress and manner to convey a professional image. Is absent only infrequently and notifies supervisor according to PSI policy. Confidentiality is maintained at all times.

  • Works with the Intake Case Manager to assist in the orientation process of all new clients.

  • Works with the Recovery Specialists communicating any daily updates through the daily log book, change of shift and to other clinicians or clinical supervisor as needed. In conjunction with Recovery Specialist staff, oversees medication management, assists in crisis prevention/intervention utilizing sound de-escalation techniques, and assists with milieu management.

  • Interviewing skills are utilized to quickly gather the data necessary for a thorough assessment. Clinical needs are conceptualized and individual treatment plans, which address client-s prioritized problems, are developed. Entire process is carried out in a timely manner. Completes a Comprehensive Assessment 24 to 48 hours of admission to program and treatment plan is in place by the end of the second session. Treatment plan is clearly related to the assessment and problems identified in assessment. Progress notes directly correspond to the treatment plan. Treatment plans are to be monitored and revised as defined by the payor sources and in accordance with program standards. All required documentation, as noted above, is entered into the electronic health record within the designated timeframes.

  • Provides high quality individual counseling services to an assigned caseload to address further treatment planning, relapse prevention, family interventions, legal issues, physical health, mental health education and housing needs daily group counseling according to accepted program standards. Facilitates and documents daily group counseling in compliance with the core group structure of the program.

  • Appropriate release forms are obtained from the client as needed. Discharge summaries are completed within 30 days and according to specified time frames. Maintains accurate written records within the electronic health record, in accordance with program standards, payor and licensing requirements, and federal regulations.

  • Coordinates case management services and treatment with collateral contacts. Prepares discharge plans on all clients with the assistance of the after care coordinator including a -crisis and/or a relapse prevention plan- to the appropriate level of treatment and aftercare support..

  • Manages time and caseload to assure that client and program needs are met.

  • A thorough knowledge of the disease and recovery process is maintained through Continuing Education. A professional level of substance abuse treatment is expected and a working knowledge of the core competencies of a substance abuse counseling. Clinical supervision is used for the development of skills necessary for use with complex cases. Interactions with clients are tailored to client-s developmental, intellectual and emotional abilities. Empathy, nurturing and support are used within the therapeutic relationship with clients. Appropriate boundaries are set and maintained. Group dynamics are thoroughly understood and facilitation style adjusted to meet the group-s changing needs. Professional ethics are adhered to at all times.

  • Participates in the organization-s quality management plan including program evaluation, client satisfaction surveys, and program specific goals and outcomes.

  • Completes required administrative documentation according to established time frames and formats. Works as directed with the billing/intake department to help maintain accurate client billing information.

  • Other duties as assigned in order to meet the needs of the organization during the COVID-19 pandemic or other public health or weather emergency.
