Job Profile Summary

​This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Medical/Behavioral Health duties: Provides behavioral evaluation services to patients and are specialized in the evaluation and treatment of mental, emotional, and/or behavioral issues. A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower level professionals or manage processes and programs. The majority of time is spent overseeing the design, implementation or delivery of processes, programs and policies using specialized knowledge and skills typically acquired through advanced education. An expert level role that is a recognized master in professional discipline typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Typically responsible for: establishing operational plans for job area, developing and implementing new products, processes, standards or operational plans that will have impact on the achievement of functional results, and requires communication with leadership.

Job Overview

​​This position provides a range of behavioral services, within the framework of the department to clients of the Department of Mental Health. Provides individual and group treatment and testing as part of a multidisciplinary team approach for patients committed to the Metro Boston mental health inpatient facilities.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an accredited graduate program in psychology.

  2. Individuals, as a condition of their employment, who are expected to obtain the Designated Forensic Psychologist (DFP) credential must be provisionally approved for DFP candidacy by the Director of the DFP Program prior to being offered employment.

  3. Five (5) years of full-time, post-doctoral experience in the application of psychological principles and techniques in a recognized agency providing psychological services or treatment.

  4. 2,000 hours of clinical experience in a setting with adult psychiatric patients with a mental illness as defined by DMH regulations OR 1,000 hours of clinical experience in an inpatient psychiatric hospital that accepts adults with a mental illness as defined by DMH regulations.

  5. Submitted letters attesting to his or her professional capabilities from at least two licensed mental health professionals familiar with work.

  6. Must hold a valid license in clinical psychology as defined by, and issued by, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Registration and be eligible to bill third party payers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience or training in individual mental health assessments and diagnostic evaluations.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Responsible for collaborating with, and making recommendations to, a multidisciplinary health care staff, based on the initial intake and assessment. Helps develop a smooth, coordinated plan of care.

  2. Provides treatment, education and or counseling for the individual utilizing behavior therapy and cognitive behavior therapy.

  3. Ensures that clinical documentation and record keeping is complete and according to professional and departmental standards.

  4. Actively engages in regularly scheduled meetings and activities of the department. Can represent the department at professional meetings.

  5. Maintains all the professional credentials required of a Massachusetts-licensed Clinical Psychologist.

  6. Provides direct psychological services, including psychological testing, evaluation, treatment, and consultation. When approved by the Facility, may conduct risk assessments, and complete Violent Behavior Assessment Forms (VBAF’s).

  7. Participates in quality assurance for psychological services by monitoring and evaluating the utilization of services and the quality of services delivered under the direction of the Facility Director, the Facility Medical Director, and the Chief of Psychology.

  8. Improves psychological services by recommending appropriate actions and by developing and implementing new programs.

  9. Participates in the recruitment of psychology staff and interns and their orientation to Department of Mental Health policies and procedures.

  10. May provide clinical and administrative supervision of psychology staff and interns, or coordinates and oversees the provision of clinical supervision.

  11. Represents psychology on relevant Facility-based committees.

  12. Conducts observations and examinations pursuant to M.G.L. c. 123, §§ 12(e). 15, 16, 17, 18, and 35.

  13. Prepares reports pursuant to M.G.L. c. 123, §§ 12(e). 15, 16, 17, 18, and 3.

  14. May be required to provide supervision, training and/or consultation to other allied mental health professionals such as social workers, licensed mental health coordinators and/or marriage and family therapy counselors, etc.

Physical Requirements:

  1. This is largely a sedentary role, which involves sitting most of the time, but may involve movements such as walking, standing, reaching, ascending/descending stairs, and operating office equipment.        

  2. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate, and exchange information.        

  3. Ability to see and read computer displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.        

  4. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation to operate computer keyboard.   

Skills & Abilities:

  1. Possesses a strong behavioral health background and has training and/or experience in behavior therapy and cognitive behavior therapy.

  2. Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

  3. Ability to identify complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

  4. Knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes: Knowledge of growth and development; Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care; Provide age specific communication

  5. Possesses strong public speaking skills.

  6. Knowledge of the effects of various medications on behavior.

  7. Knowledge of computer skills and knowledge of general office programs.
