Opportunity Overview
North Shore Community Health (NSCH) is an industry leader in exceptional delivery of community healthcare. We are looking for a Phlebotomist Medical Assistant (MA) for our Gloucester Family Health Center. Reporting to the Clinical Nurse Manager, the Phlebotomist MA is an exciting dual role. When scheduled as a Phlebotomist, this MA will perform routine primary care medical laboratory tests including venous blood draws and urine specimen collection for diagnosis and treatment, as well as Point-of-Care Tests. When scheduled as a Medical Assistant, this person is responsible for assisting providers with patient visits including administrative, clinical and laboratory duties. The MA is expected to take a very active role within the team in terms of ongoing duties and in seeking constant improvement to the processes. As a team member at our health center, you will work with staff who are racially, ethnically and culturally diverse, so cultural humility is required, as well as a willingness to use a phone interpreter when needed to communicate effectively with our patients.

Responsibilities:
Essential MA Functions:
Provides outstanding customer service, both to internal and external customers
Screens patients according to established protocol, including but not limited to height, weight, urine testing, hematocrits, vision testing, blood pressure, PHQ-9, and other behavioral health screenings
Prepares paperwork for referrals and provides translation services as needed
Documents patient interactions in Epic using Smart tools and standard workflows
Obtains point-of-care tests and sets up for procedures as listed under the MA competency checklist
Performs the tasks within the EMR as listed in the MA competency checklist
Participates in the orders, hospital discharge, and ER tracking
Clean and stock exam rooms, maintain sterilization statistics, and an inventory control system
Perform quality assurance tests as necessary
Answers phone or EMR messages when needed. Contacts patients, via letter, telephone or patient portal and schedule patients as needed
HIPAA: Maintains integrity and completeness of medical record and patient confidentiality
Copy and fax documents as needed
Manages durable medical equipment requests.
Assists with visiting nurse referrals and prior authorizations
Performing additional duties to fulfill NSCH's mission, as assigned.
Essential Phlebotomy Functions:
Successfully passes our phlebotomy skills competency test under supervision from an RN or RN Manager
Performs phlebotomy and lab collection for patients who cannot get labs done at the hospital due to transportation difficulties, medical conditions or disability, or social barriers
Performs applicable blood collection technique
Labels blood samples with sensitivity and confidentiality
Receive, label and analyze other samples
Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility
Report test results following protocols alerting providers and/or nurses about abnormal results in Epic
Maintain equipment and assist in ordering laboratory supplies
Ensure that all safety guidelines are always followed strictly and maintain a clean and orderly environment
Quality assurance for Massachusetts State Licensure, Federal (CLIA) Lab Certification
Perform high-quality venous lab draws as well as collect urine specimens according to Standard Operating Procedures of the health center
Collaborate with Operations and Clinical Leadership to conduct routine quality assurance and infection control testing and emergency preparedness drills
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with occasional high-pressure or emergent situations
Must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to bodily fluids
Able to manage risk of exposure to infectious specimens in a calm manner with good preventative and post-exposure skills
Requirements
Graduate of a Medical Assistant program required
Certification in Phlebotomy required
Experience working in a medical field as a MA, CNA, EMT, Phlebotomy and other related fields
Completion or willingness to complete Basic Life Support training (CPR)
Ability to work effectively as part of the team
Willingness to communicate using an Interpreter as needed for patient care
Willingness to be flexible about work assignments
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Current vaccination against COVID, flu, pertussis and tetanus
Competency in working with Microsoft Office Suite and GE Centricity is a plus
1 year+ experience in phlebotomy strongly preferred, especially with pediatrics
1-2 years’ full-time experience in a healthcare setting or in a customer service setting
Though the main site will be Gloucester, flexibility to float between our 3 main locations (Gloucester, Peabody, Salem) and work reliably and safely from home at times preferred
Bilingual, especially Spanish or Portuguese, strongly preferred
Lived experience with other cultures preferred
