Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Emergency Services, the ED Behavioral Health Therapist (BHT) is part of the ED Care Team and will provide assessment, crisis evaluations, SBIRT screening, referrals, and individual, family and/or group therapy sessions to patients as they wait for transfer, reducing or eliminating idle non-therapeutic time within the ED, integrating Primary and Behavioral Healthcare. Provide brief interventions and support medical and psychosocial interventions as part of the ED care team. Develop ED care plans with care team members and identify Community Health Worker (CHW) support referral when necessary. The BHT will work with the CHW to facilitate bed placement. In addition, the BHT may also provide ESP consults for hospitalized patient. The focus is typically on diagnostic and functional evaluation, problem-solving, and recommendations for treatment and forming limited behavioral change goals. The visit may involve assessing clients at risk because of some life stress event and is designed to coordinate delivery of medical and/or mental health services through multi-disciplinary involvement. Brief client contacts and the ability to make quick and accurate clinical assessments of mental and behavioral conditions while within the pace of ED setting, working with an interdisciplinary team, and has strong communication skills.

Job Requirements**

Minimum Education

  • MSW, MSS or in Counseling, Human Service, Therapist or related field from an accredited graduate program.
  • SBIRT trained or willingness to be trained.

Minimum Work Experience

  • Minimum three years working with the psychiatric populations
  • Experience and/or understanding of the emergency department, inpatient setting and outpatient behavioral health needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly assess and treat psychiatric problems.
  • Addiction experience is a plus.

Required Licenses

[Massachusetts, United States] Social Workers

  • Social Worker Licensure required

Essential Functions

  • Initiate evaluation process and manage therapeutic engagement for behavioral health patients in the emergency department adhering to department standards.

  • Service to include assessments, crisis evaluations, SBIRT screening, referrals, and individual, family and/or group therapy sessions, as needed. Provide brief interventions and support medical and psychosocial interventions as part of the ED care team.

  • Initiate development, review, and maintenance of ED care plans with care team members and community partners, as appropriate. Working in partnership with Community Health Worker (CHW) support referral when necessary. The BHT will work with the CHW to facilitate bed placement.

  • Provide ESP consults for hospitalized patients as appropriate.

  • Focus is typically on diagnostic and functional evaluation, problem-solving, and recommendations for treatment and forming limited behavioral change goals.

  • The visit may involve assessing clients at risk because of some life stress event and is designed to coordinate delivery of medical and/or mental health services through multi-disciplinary involvement.
