The Utilities Technician, I&C will have a strong focus on maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment on all PLC, VFD and electrical / Mechanical Systems. Individuals are expected to demonstrate technical expertise in I&C, electrical and troubleshooting. The individual in this role must be available for call-in work and perform other duties as required. Some overtime is to be expected. The goal is to develop and maintain building and campus assets through proper maintenance.

*This is a rotating 2nd shift position (6pm-6am), therefore eligible for a 20% shift differential

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize in-depth knowledge and experience to diagnose and troubleshoot complex electronic and electrical issues in equipment, circuitry, and systems.

  • Maintains, calibrates, diagnoses, repairs, replaces, or installs instrumentation and control systems, SCADA, and end devices. Including but not limited to; Programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Direct Digital Controls (DDC) plant or distributive control systems and instrument loops. Flow meters including but not limited to; Process ultrasonic, magnetic, vortex shedding, anemometer, pitot., other meters and devices including but not limited to; btu meters, pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, Humidity transmitters, level transmitters (float, ultrasonic, radar, and pressure, etc.) chemical, PH, electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on critical electronic and electrical equipment, minimizing downtime and optimizing performance.

  • Perform complex repairs and upgrades on electronic components, circuit boards, and control systems to enhance functionality and efficiency.

  • Analyze calibration and testing data to identify trends, deviations, and areas for improvement, and provide recommendations for process optimization.

  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines when handling sensitive electronic equipment and electrical systems.

  • Collaborate with the maintenance team and provide technical training and support to less experienced technicians.

  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives, identifying opportunities to enhance equipment reliability and performance.

  • Repair electrical systems control malfunctions of equipment such as transformers, relays, switches, control, generator monitoring and control systems, medium and high voltage distribution systems, and monitoring devices.

  • Maintain, repairs, replaces, and installs Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), Soft starters, and Silicon Controlled Rectifiers (SCRs)

  • Works with Contractors and BAS technicians to ensure accurate communications to and from the Building Automation and Energy Management

  • Record readings and make adjustments where necessary to ensure proper operation of equipment.

  • Assist with the installation and repair all BAS – PLC’s and VFD’s;

  • Individual will partner with subject matter experts (SME) & Reliability services to trouble operational issues.

  • Ensures that all appropriate R&M data (e.g., material costs, contract labor costs, effort) is captured on a work order.

  • Role will support of the following operations at the BMS Devens campus:

  • Biologics Large Scale Commercial Manufacturing

  • Biologics Clinical Manufacturing

  • Biologics Cell Bank Manufacturing

  • Biologics Development and Laboratory operations

  • CAR-T (Cell Therapy) Manufacturing

  • Responsible for the effective uninterrupted support of Facilities operational activities for BMS Devens.

  • Review and analyzing system data and developing initial recommendation with Reliability Manager and/or Operations Manager on any maintenance changes, upgrades, replacements, etc.

  • Cross train and / or support, as appropriate to the advanced level.

  • Maintain up to date and complete system documentation in a central resource location for all repairs or changes to the system.

  • Analyze the operation of various systems, determine the cause of any problems/malfunctions and take corrective action as required.

  • Run conduit; pull wiring to machinery, motors, operating parts, etc.

  • Comply with departmental policy for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.

  • Maintain a clean and safe workplace.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:

  • High School diploma, state equivalent, or GED equivalent.

  • 2+ years of related trade school or job experience required.

  • Electrical License preferred.

  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and local codes.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate well in both oral and written reports

  • Familiar with computer equipment and programs.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Ability to operate electric hand tools, work on a ladder up to 28’, carry tools, lift and carry heavy loads, operate required equipment, and operate a motor vehicle

  • Ability to work in close places such as closets, crawl spaces, attics, vaults, etc.

  • Ability to work on roofs of buildings – able to safely perform overhead work while standing on a ladder

  • Demonstrate ability to manage across functional lines and deliver results in a matrix organization.
