Thermo Fisher Scientific Scientist / Senior Scientist - Process Analytics in Devens, Massachusetts

In this role you will provide analytical testing support as requested by the client within the large molecule (bilologics) Manufacturing Science & Technology (MS&T) Process Analytics group. You will support routine in-process drug substance (DS) and drug product (DP) testing through a broad variety of analytical methods. You are also expected to be the group’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) for several analytical methods, provide technical support and training to colleagues, and lead method improvement and innovation activities. In addition, you will also assist with overseeing routine testing of in-process samples, coordinate sample testing schedules, function as a point of contact (POC) for sample submitters and ensure that agreed turnaround times are met.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform routine analytical testing of in-process samples through analytical methods including but not limited to ELISA, liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, ELISA, A280, qPCR

  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of lab activities; Prepare and review electronic notebook (ELN) entries

  • Function as subject matter expert (SME) for ELISA based impurity measurements and potency measurements; assist with assay troubleshooting and instrument maintenance

  • Play a key role in lab safety, 5S and maintain smooth lab operations

  • Identify and lead method improvement projects, such as automate ELISA assay steps on automated liquid handling platforms; improve analytical testing method throughput and consistency through innovation and automation

  • Make and maintain connections with analytical teams across the company’s network

  • Present at group huddles and group meetings

  • Lead training of analysts

  • Implement assay automation with automated liquid handler systems

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification

  • Previous industry experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job:

  • Associate Scientist: With a bachelor’s degree comparable to 0-2+ years.

  • Scientist: With a bachelor’s degree comparable to 2+ years, with a master’s degree comparable to 0-2+ years.

  • Senior Scientist: With a bachelor’s degree comparable to 4+ years, with a master’s degree comparable to 2+ years, with a PhD comparable to 0-2+ years.

In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Previous experience working in an industry analytical laboratory environment is highly desired

  • Previous experience on immunoassay, ELISA, Tecan is strongly preferred.

  • Previous experience on the below analytical methods is also preferred: liquid chromatography (HPLC/UPLC, SEC, ion exchange chromatography, HILIC), glycan analysis (sialic analysis, N-glycan analysis) capillary electrophoresis (CE-SDS, PA800+, Maurice, iCIEF, Labchip), residual DNA, SDS-PAGE, A280, UV-Vis,

  • Self-motivated, interested in opportunities to expand knowledge base

  • Appreciation for teamwork and diversity

  • Must be able to multi-task

  • Experience with automated liquid handling systems is preferred

  • Knowledge with large scale mammalian cell-based manufacturing processes preferred

  • Familiarity with LIMS and ELN is preferred

  • Able to work on-site for 5 days a week
