State of Massachusetts Industrial Instructor III - Wood Shop Concord in Concord, Massachusetts

Duties: Supervise MassCor Industrial Instructors and the training of offenders assigned to the Wood Shop. Responsible for conducting Employee Performance Evaluations for assigned staff and the coordination of their schedules. Monitor overtime, sick leave and staff attendance to insure they are not abused. Plan vacations and leaves to ensure that the shop is adequately covered at all times. Responsible for production planning, staff work assignments, quality, safety, machine operation, security, overall tool control, instruction, training of offenders and general economic operation of the shop. Maintains order tracking and cost monitoring for the Wood Shop. Maintain accurate accounting and inventory records within TBS. Generates input for backlog and status summary reports as required. Check all offenders in and account for their presence at all times that they are in the care of Industries. Maintain tool control from a lockable tool crib, with a sign out system and permanent log to ACA standards. Control designated hazardous materials with a sign out system and permanent log to ACA standards. Estimate costs and make out cost sheets as required. Plan stock and raw material needed for production and submit requisitions in time to meet production needs. Plans stock orders to be made for anticipated production needs in conjunction with marketing projections. Maintain security and perform required security checks on a regular basis. Set schedules, perform and record preventive maintenance servicing and inspections on all equipment. Submit requisitions for tooling and consumable supplies as needed for production. Establish training for shop staff including cross training and vendor supplied courses. Coordinate with the institution to insure that EPA, DEQE, OSHA, and ACA standards are met. Performs manufacturing engineering to development products and manufacturing procedures. May require contact with customers regarding orders, designs, and new items via marketing and sales staff. Performs all other duties as required. Preferred Qualifications: Five years of manufacturing experience in a related industry as a shop supervisor, shop manager, senior manufacturing engineer, industrial engineer or production control supervisor. Active membership in related professional societies such as SME, APICS, etc. is desirable. Five years experience in a related position and trade apprenticeship or technical training of at least two years (or equivalent on the job training and experience). Individual must possess a high degree of technical/business versatility. Must also be able to deal with the unique issues of training, and motivating offenders while maintaining security. Comments: This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. The selected candidate will have to submit to a psychological and drug screening and must attend and pass an Industrial Instructor Recruit Training Academy. *Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in industrial arts work, the major duties of which involved training or instructing, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in industrial arts may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
