State of Massachusetts Recreational Therapist I in Chelsea, Massachusetts

The Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Recreation Therapist I. The Recreation Therapist I will assist the Recreation Therapy Supervisor with planning, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive recreation program to maintain/promote social, emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities for adult and geriatric veteran population. _Duties and responsibilities_(These are a general summary and not all inclusive): _ * Motivates clients to participate in recreation activities for those functioning at various levels of impairment. * Maintains attendance records of patient participation in activities. * Assists supervisor with planning, organizing and running daily activities; supervises group activities, such as, beano, musical entertainment, movies, reminiscence groups. * Provides 1-1 visits to clients at bedside, in unit, in canteen and outdoors. * Assists with purchasing of activity supplies, decorations, and paper goods. * Assists supervisor with the assignment and direction of volunteers. * Works with family members, veterans, and civic organizations at various recreation activities. * Assists with record keeping and accounting of activity expenditures. * Reports and discusses observations of patient participation in activities to supervisor as part of interdisciplinary process. * Maintains CPR certification. * Transports patients to activities while promoting a safe environment. * Performs related duties as required. * Adheres to agency policies and procedures; enforces rules and regulations. *Required Qualifications:* * Knowledge of principles, theory, practice, and terminology of Therapeutic Recreation. * Ability to maintain accurate records and document concisely to develop ideas in logical sequence. * Capacity to work effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team. * Talent for establishing rapport and maintain harmonious working relationships with persons from varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. * Skilled in exercising discretion in handling confidential information. * Ability to work with special populations. * Ability to drive state vehicle/bus in a safe manner. *Preferred Qualifications:* * Skilled in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgement, discretion, and decision making to achieve objectives. * Thoroughness, independence, and excellent written and oral communication skills. * CTRS certification (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) * One-year experience in a health care facility desirable. *About the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea:* The Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea is a multidimensional health care and housing facility first established in 1882. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for the required experience.* Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
