Summary The incumbent serves as the Pharmacy Technician in the Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy (CMOP). Incumbent participates in the technical product dispensing and pharmacy operational support functions under the general supervision of the unit. If questions arise, a lead pharmacy technician, supervisory pharmacy technician or supervisory pharmacist is consulted for assistance in resolving the issue. Responsibilities Major Duties: 1. May work in any of the following areas: Automated dispensing, labeling, manifesting, packing and receiving. With additional advanced training, may be authorized to work in manual fill. 2. Assembling drugs and supplies. Assembles and packages drugs and supplies for mailing to patients. Knowledge of special packing techniques for various medications, e.g., narcotics, refrigerated items, bulk supplies and nutritional products are required. May also be required to manifest packages for appropriate delivery services. 3. Transports stock from receiving to storage and dispensing areas. 4. Assist in daily cleaning, to include emptying and/or relining the trash receptacles and breaking down cardboard boxes and preparing for disposal and/or recycling. 5. Recommends changes for the improvement of workflow, work methods and priorities involved. 6. Report downtime problems, actions and resolutions for all interruptions in production that exceed 10 minutes. 7. Accurately interpret, fills and readies prescriptions with appropriate medications and/or medical supplies for pharmacist verification. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D paragraph 5a, this part. Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. GS-05 Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of: Pharmaceutical nomenclature; Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals. Customer Services: Relationships with Management and co-worker is consistently courteous, respectful and cooperative in nature. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 lbs and bending/ stooping/ reaching. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
