HNTB New Grad Electrical Engineer I: Communications Systems in Chelmsford, Massachusetts

What We're Looking For

HNTB, one of the largest and most respected design firms in the transportation industry, is seeking Electrical Engineer Communication Systems candidates in our Chelmsford, MA office.

Communications systems support safe train operations, provide information to the traveling public and supports security. HNTB is a leader in this field within the United States in all facets, from initial planning, through technical design, project management and through to construction support.

The HNTB Communications team is actively involved in providing services for transportation agencies across the country. This type of work involves design of fiber optic systems, radio systems, control systems, video surveillance, access control, Voice over IP (VoIP) and passenger information systems. This is for an Entry Level Electrical engineer who will be actively involved in all aspects of the HNTB communications team assisting in the preparation of design calculations, drawings, specifications, engineering cost estimates, and field support for various rail projects. The position provides opportunities for advancement and growth in a unique specialized field.

Expected activities include developing system-level designs with associated calculations and simulations, developing cable routing, preparing/producing contract specifications for contractors to follow, developing cost estimates/projections, participating in project meetings, reviewing contractor submittals/RFIs, developing of CAD drawings from past project samples, learning and following the Quality Assurance process, supporting field verification, inspections, and testing, preparation of engineering estimating, packaging and checking of peer submittal documents, performing basic electrical load and voltage drop calculations, development of cable raceway designs and calculations to support, and performing interdisciplinary reviews to verify design submittals are coordinated within the associated rail disciplines.

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

What You'll Bring:

  • Be a key member of the production staff using CAD (AutoCAD or Microstation), Excel spreadsheets and specialist software in order to support the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Develop understanding of key areas of the work and apply these principles and working basis to produce engineering designs efficiently and effectively as part of a larger team.

  • Applicant would be working with other production staff under the direction of senior department engineers and take personal responsibility for quality completion of project specific tasks.

  • Support engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, simulation, development, and design of projects.

  • Be innovative and pro-active with good communications skills.

  • Continue to take direction of Senior department staff while continuing learning and development, in an active production environment.

  • Gain knowledge of standard engineering processes and document production within the discipline.

  • Be adaptable with a flexible work approach and coordinate with supervisors starting new tasks, developing design, and completing and closing out work tasks.

  • Gain knowledge of Federal Rail Administration Rules and Regulations for Signal Systems

  • Coordinate well with other engineering disciplines within the organization.

  • Have goals of achieving EIT and PE certifications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

What We Prefer:

  • BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering

  • GPA 3.0 or higher

  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD

  • Knowledgeable with Microsoft suite of tools e.g. Powerpoint, MS Office, Excel, Word

  • Programming experience preferred but not required

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred but not required
