What We're Looking For

HNTB, one of the nation’s largest and most respected design firms in the transportation industry, is seeking candidates for our OCS Engineering Intern position in our Chelmsford, MA office.

Overhead Contact Systems provide civil, structural, and mechanical designs which support the distribution of power to operate electrified rail and rapid transit networks. These civil infrastructure solutions provide the ability to distribute power, supporting light rail, commuter rail, vast high speed rail corridors as well as utility T&D and other breakthrough technology for electric transportation infrastructure. Together, we can support our nations efforts toward greener energy usage, reducing the global carbon footprint.

HNTB is a nationwide leader in this field, including all aspects of the engineering process. Including but not limited to: Planning, project management, concept through final design, construction management/oversight, as-built documentation, and asset management.

Designs include catenary systems aerial cable networks, mechanical designs for in-span aerial components, railway pole and portal structures, tunnel support systems, railway pole lines, transmission line and tower designs, substation gantry structures, creative structural concepts for station and community aesthetics.

This is for an intern engineer who will be actively involved in all aspects of the engineering team assisting in preparing designs, reports and studies for OCS, transmission & distribution system improvements, capital projects for various rail and state agencies, nationwide and Canada from feasibility through final design and construction.

What You’ll Do:

• Assists engineer teams in various tasks and duties.

• Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.

• Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need:

• High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program

What You’ll Bring:

• Become a key member of the production staff using CAD, spreadsheets, and specialist software to support the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, models, calculations, quantities, and estimates.

• Work with the latest technology in LiDAR scanning survey data and tools for mm accurate large scale project designs.

• Use the latest techniques for developing virtual design models.

• Perform basic engineering tasks related to the work and education level of the applicant.

• Develop basic understanding of key areas of the work and start to apply these principles to support production of engineering designs

• Work efficiently and effectively as part of a larger team learning the approach to major project engineering and construction.

• Support engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

• Be innovative and pro-active with strong communications skills.

• Take direction of Sr. department staff while continuing learning and development in an active production environment.

• Gain knowledge of standard engineering processes and document production within the discipline.

• Be adaptable with a flexible work approach and coordinate with supervisors.

• Perform other duties as assigned

What We Prefer:

• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Mathcad, mapping tools.

• Experience with Microsoft suite of tools e.g., PowerPoint, MS Office, Excel, Word

• Experience with Staad-Pro or other structural analysis software

• Experience with PLS-Cadd Transmission design software a plus
