Under the direction of the Manager of Health Information Management, the Release of Information Specialist is responsible for processing all assigned requests for medical records in a timely and efficient manner. This position must always safeguard and protect the patient’s right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient’s medical information and that all ROI requests follow the request authorization and healthcare facility policies as well as federal/state statutes, such as HIPAA

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  1. Handles release of information to all requestors, patients, health care providers, insurance companies, lawyers, etc. per hospital policy.

  2. Ensures medical records are accurately filed in the permanent and incomplete file.

  3. Pulls medical records when needed.

  4. Ensures purging of the permanent medical records is done properly.

  5. Ensures medical records are sent to the archival area when necessary.

  6. Pulling medical records when needed

  7. Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards related to health information management.

  8. Monitor and prioritize filing medical record tasks to meet established deadlines and maintain productivity.

  9. Maintain confidentiality and security of all patient information per HIPAA Guidelines.

  10. Troubleshot any technical issues related to filing medical records.

  11. Train and educate other team members on proper medical record filing procedures.

  12. Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • HS diploma or equivalent

  • Associate degree in related field preferred

Experience:

  • Previous office experience

  • Experience working in Health Information Management preferred

  • 5 years or more Experience with Data Integrity preferred

  • Computer skills

  • Epic experience desirable

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Medical terminology

  • Knowledge of medical records content and management

  • Working knowledge of the EMR either through experience or education, including experience working with structured data and database management

  • Knowledge of laws and regulations about health information and patient confidentiality

  • Adheres to Department, Hospital, and Human Resource Policies
