City of Cambridge Water Quality Supervisor-Treatment in Cambridge, Massachusetts

Under the direction of the Laboratory Manager, takes responsibility for monitoring water quality. Supervises laboratory functions to ensure compliance with federal and state drinking water and laboratory certification regulations. Duties shared with Supervisor of Water Quality-Supply Operation and maintenance of pH/ISE meters, Conductance meter, turbidimeters, UV/Vis Spectrometer, Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometer (ICP/MS), Liquid Ion Chromatograph (IC), Liquid Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (LCMS) and Analytical balances. Performs analytical testing using laboratory equipment. Maintains current knowledge of developments in federal and state regulation and technology regarding water quality. Identifies actions required to ensure department compliance. Orders and maintains laboratory supplies. Maintains Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), Co-ordinates incoming chemical QC, Jar Testing, process control measurements and record keeping with plant staff. Performs studies or tests as required to optimize treatment plant performance. Participates in hiring, training and supervising 2 Co-op laboratory technician positions every six months. Performs field sampling throughout the city, some of which is performed in construction zones. Writes and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs) Maintains cleanliness of laboratory and equipment Responds to customer service inquiries. Participates in hosting public treatment plant tours. Performs other duties as may be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor\'s Degree required in the fields of Chemistry, Biology, or related field, 30 credits of Chemistry and 4 credits of Microbiology are required or ability to obtain these credits within 1 (one) year. At least two years of full-time responsible experience in a State certified testing laboratory. Working knowledge in the operation of laboratory instrumentation, Experience and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Apple IOS computer databases, spreadsheets and word-process?ing software. Current driver?s license. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience preparing and analyzing samples for PFAS analysis (EPA537.1, 533, and 1633). Experience analyzing samples for metals analysis (EPA200.8), VOC/THM (EPA524.2), Ions (SM4110B) and TOC (SM5310C). Experience analyzing samples for total coliform and E.coli using method SM9223 and heterotrophic plate count (HPC) using method SM9215B. Experience working with municipal government, familiarity with Cambridge and a Massachusetts Grade 3 or 4 Treatment Plant Operator\'s license is highly desirable. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work involves frequent site visits, requiring travel to and through active construction zones, driving, walking, bending, squatting, reaching, and stretching. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to answer phones, maintain multiple files, and lift a minimum of at least 10 pounds.
