Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • BA strongly preferred

  • At least 3 years of work experience desirable, preferably in the non-profit, education, or museum sector

  • Must be able to work independently, with minimal supervision, and as part of a team

  • Strong interpersonal skills required including strong verbal and written communication

  • Must be highly organized with capacity to manage and prioritize competing tasks while maintaining superior customer service

  • A background in training or education is helpful but not required

  • Fluency in additional language(s) a plus

  • Ability to work a schedule that includes weekends and some holidays, as an essential frontline staff member.

Other: The Harvard Museums of Science and Culture (HMSC) is a partnership of public museums in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences that includes the Harvard Museum of Natural History, the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East, the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.

Job Function:General Administration Position Description:

Supervise public visitation at CHSI and HMANE

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise college student employees responsible for front desk support: greeting museum visitors, answering logistical and exhibit content questions, maintaining accurate counts of museum visitors, contributing to an overall welcoming and positive museum experience

  • Train student employees in operational procedures and museum-specific context to deliver the highest level of customer service, enhance visitor engagement and meet the needs of each Museum

  • As part of weekend coverage, train staff employees on basic opening and closing procedures of the museums including disarming galleries, restocking print materials, and awareness of any issues that may affect the public

  • Provide front desk coverage at these locations during unanticipated gaps in student or staff scheduling.

Support public engagement and student involvement at HMSC

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise student employees responsible for conducting student tours at HMSC Museums, currently only at the Peabody Museum.

  • Support HMSC Education in the development of tour content and other on-site activities to enhance visitor engagement across HMSC museums

  • Organize trainings for student tour guide program working closely with relevant HMSC Education staff

  • Supervise the implementation of student tours and other educational activities at HMSC museums

  • Work collaboratively with HMSC Education Directors on student-facing projects, HMSC Student Board, and engagement at HMSC; Foster a connection between student employees and HMSC and solicit insight from students on potential opportunities to further engage Harvard students at FAS museums

Additional supervisory responsibilities

  • Serve as principal source of information on established policies and procedures for visitor services at CHSI and HMANE and student activities across HMSC.

  • Coordinate student schedules to ensure necessary coverage during museum hours, student-guided tours, and special events

  • Track visitation and serve as a liaison for day-to-day communication between Research Museum staff and HMSC for public visitation and college student activities

  • Schedule and conduct student trainings and evaluate student performance

  • Serve as a point person for public safety issues and emergencies as required; report any physical plant or operations issues to appropriate staff.

  • Weekends and some holidays may be required. Note that the museums are open for business 361 days per year, and Visitor Services staff are considered essential employees.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations, this position is responsible for supervising the Visitor Services operation for the Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments (CHSI) and the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East (HMANE), two of the four public museums that comprise the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture. This position will staff, train, supervise and coordinate weekday undergraduate and graduate student coverage and weekend Harvard employee coverage to support public visitation at two sites; track visitation, and serve as a liaison for day-to-day communication between Research Museum staff and HMSC for public visitation and college student activities; and collaborate with HMSC and Research Museum staff to evaluate student roles and other initiatives that could enhance the visitor experience across HMSC museums. The Visitor Services Student Supervisor is also responsible for supervising college student tour programs at HMSC. This position requires the ability to handle emergent issues, troubleshoot technical issues, facilitate problem resolution, and manage multiple priorities within a set deadline. As part of museums’ staffing plan, this role is expected to provide support to other visitor services locations as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.
