Posting Description
SURGERY VETERINARY TECHNICIAN, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to work closely with stakeholders and the broader MIT research community to ensure that the health and welfare of animals is paramount; serve as a liaison between the veterinarian(s) and research laboratory personnel to facilitate and support a variety of specialized and complex technical procedures in animals; maintain complete and accurate medical records; provide exceptional clinical care and provide exceptional technical assistance to animals in: anesthesia, surgical preparation, imaging procedures, recovering and/or nursing support at MIT; assist in the medical care of laboratory animals including documented evaluation(s) of animal health and the prevention and treatment of disease; perform daily clinical rounds to evaluate animals for signs of illness and provide clinical treatments to animals as directed by the veterinarian; and prepare animal patients for, and assist in a variety of veterinary-directed or research-specific procedures, including but not limited to: handling, restraint, sedation, phlebotomy, health examinations, surgical procedures, dental procedures, diagnostic imaging, euthanasia.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: High School diploma or equivalent; a minimum of three years of experience working with animals in a research setting with primary responsibilities in anesthesia and surgery; ability to respond to changing circumstances by being innovative and adaptive to different situations, work independently, interact and communicate effectively with veterinary, animal husbandry, and research laboratory personnel, and work with a large variety of species including small mammals, birds, swine, amphibians and nonhuman primates; detail-oriented; basic computer skills (word-processing, spreadsheets, and e-mails); and the ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods and move more than 10 lbs for prolonged periods of time. PREFERRED: Bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology or related field; and additional certification(s), such as Surgical Research Anesthetist (SRA) or Surgical Research Technician (SRT).
