Sanofi Group Senior Usability Engineer in Cambridge, Massachusetts

The Senior Usability Leader drives patient-centricity and user-centricity in the user interface design of our devices and combination products. The position’s responsibility is to contribute Human Factors Engineering (HFE) in our development projects (medical devices or combination products) and to ensure that HFE tasks are performed with appropriate rigor and in a timely manner. The primary objectives of the Usability Leader’s work is to:

  • Develop user needs together with patients, user and patient/ user assositations

  • Design the product to meet users needs and customer expectations

  • Make the use of the product safe and effective to use

  • Make the product compliant with the applicable regulations worldwide

The Senior Usability Leader will translate insights from exploratory and formative evaluations into user interface specifications and provide user insights to the design team. The Usability Leader provides HFE subject matter expertise to cross functional global teams interacting with experts for industrialization, clinical operations, business, marketing, medical and regulatory affairs.

The Senior Usability Leader will also oversee and participate in design validation and design verification activities pertaining to human factors engineering. This includes:

  • Developing protocols in alignment with regulatory bodies’ expectations

  • Conduct and overseeing human factors validation testing

  • Reviewing and contributing to human factors validation reports

  • Developing human factors engineering reports for regulatory submissions

  • Ensuring validation of user needs, product requirements, and device packaging and labelling

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in human factors/usability or a related field (e.g., biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, psychology, economics, human-computer interaction, etc.)

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of work experience applying human factors to medical devices or combination products

  • Strong understanding of human factors research elements (e.g., study design, moderating, root cause analysis)

  • Deep knowledge of human factors/usability engineering principles, best practices, and international usability standards and guidance (e.g., ANSI/AAMI/IEC 62366-1, ANSI/AAMI HE75, FDA guidance, NMPA guidance, ISO 14971)

  • Familiarity and comfort with navigating health authority expectations for human factors

  • Ability to advise and execute on creative human factors strategies to fit unique project needs

  • High self-motivation and self-starting attitude and drive

  • Passion for human factors and user-centered design, with a strong interest in and empathy for patients’ needs

  • Clear and effective communication in written and spoken English

  • Experience presenting to a large range of stakeholders up to senior management level

  • Willingness to travel regularly to human factors study sites, primarily in the US, or to Europe or Asia

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience moderating usability tests

  • Experience managing external vendors/consultants

  • Interest in presenting at and/or attending industry conferences

  • Experience using design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Photoshop)

  • Master’s degree in human factors/usability or a related field (e.g., biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, psychology, human-computer interaction)
