Biogen Scientist II - Retinal Neurodegenerative in Cambridge, Massachusetts
The Ophthalmology Group at Biogen is seeking an independent and highly motivated Scientist with expertise in retinal neurodegenerative diseases who will provide hands-on support. The group is responsible for the discovery and validation of ocular disease targets and translating them into novel therapeutic interventions. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience in a variety of in vivo and in vitro models relevant for ophthalmic diseases and the ability to utilize these models for target validation, mechanism of action studies and support for drug discovery projects. The selected individual is expected to independently plan and execute experiments, rigorously analyze and interpret the results to achieve agreed upon objectives. S/he will contribute to development of new lines of drug discovery research or new technologies in pursuit of department objectives. /Hands-on experience in gene therapy for inherited retinal diseases is a big plus./ What You'll Do: * Conduct research project to support the development of new Ophthalmic Gene Therapy platform. * Contribute to the design and execution of projects conducted in support of clinical-staged programs. * Develop and run in vivo models of ocular disease and establish methods for evaluation of these models in house. * Share ophthalmological expertise and assist with training team members. * Participate in target identification and validation efforts and assessment of potential therapeutics. * Identify and pursue novel and potentially translatable techniques or endpoints for preclinical models. * Collaborate broadly with colleagues in ophthalmology, other research units and functional areas at Biogen, as well as with external collaborators. Required Skills * Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Ophthalmology, or related discipline with 3+ years of post-doctoral experience – industry experience ideal, or MS with 10+ years of relevant experience in Academia/industry. * In-depth knowledge of retinal diseases, mechanisms and in-vivo models. * Extensive hands-on experience and willingness to perform small laboratory animal handling, survival and microscopic surgery, tissue harvesting, immunostaining and biochemical analyses is essential * Expertise in ocular delivery methods, including subretinal injection, intravitreal injection, suprachoroidal delivery, intracameral injection and subconjunctival injection. * Skilled in ophthalmological in vivo methods, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), optokinetic reflex (OKR), fundus imaging, electroretinography (ERG), slit lamp ophthalmoscopy, IOP measurement, optometry. * Experience with various modalities including gene therapy vectors, protein-based therapeutics, and/or antisense oligonucleotides is a plus. * Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, as well as ability to work independently are essential. * Excellent written and oral communication skills, analytical capability and the ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team. * Drug discovery experience in Ophthalmology is a plus All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.
