    Job Description

RESEARCH COMPUTING SUPPORT SPECIALIST, Office of Research Computing and Data (ORCD), to serve as a computational specialist to MIT researchers (faculty, students, and staff) for the full life cycle of application development, including design, coding, testing, and production support on a broad set of ORCD, national, and/or cloud resources. Will participate in front-line support, answering tickets and attending office hours to debug and resolve computation issues; develop and conduct customer-relevant training; optimize customer experience workflows; contribute to evolving MIT-wide integrated research computing hardware and software platform initiatives; engage in targeted software and data collaborations with research groups. Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in a scientific field or computer science; seven years’ experience in scientific high-performance (cluster) computing; familiarity with Slurm and high-performance filesystems; broad computational background, e.g., with knowledge of Unix, HPC algorithms, GPU computing, programming models, debuggers, and performance tools; Software development experience, especially Python, MATLAB, R, Lua, JavaScript, etc.; knowledge of high-level APIs for HPC computing; expertise installing and maintaining third-party software in an HPC environment; expertise with container technology, especially in the context of computational reproducibility; initiative, tact, and judgment in developing solutions for users; and strong interpersonal skills. Must be able to work with users (scientists and engineers) and understand their requirements; communicate orally, in writing, and via live presentations; assume leadership roles; and grasp complex problems and develop solutions. PREFERRED: advanced-level technical experience in industry, the military, or higher education; and experience delivering complex high-performance computing solutions at scale for a wide technically-competent customer base.
