Additional Information:

Ethnicity, Migration, Rights (EMR) is a curricular academic unit that allows undergraduates to pursue secondary fields in ethnic studies, Indigenous studies, border and migration studies, and human rights. It grants secondary field recognition under the headings of "EMR" and "Latino Studies." EMR's programming includes co-curricular working groups in Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, Latinx Studies, Muslim American Studies, and dissertation writing. The program serves the wider Harvard community with a variety of events and academic opportunities that exceed classroom instruction.

This position will anchor EMR’s secondary field advising, and support the Chair with non-ladder faculty supervision and the design and implementation of co-curricular programs. With the Faculty Chair, this position will design and implement curriculum that meets the needs of secondary fielders in EMR and Latinx Studies. It will contribute to the long-term development of ethnic studies, Indigenous studies, and migration and border studies at Harvard University.

Working Conditions:

Work is primarily performed in an office setting with some remote work flexibility.

Position Description:

  • Serves as secondary field (minor) advisor for students pursuing "EMR" and "Latino Studies" secondaries.

  • Teaches one EMR-related course per academic year, on a topic agreed upon with Chair.

  • Collaborates closely with Finance and Operations Coordinator and Academic Programs Coordinator (weekly meetings, day to day communication regarding student employee management, events, prize processes, etc.)

  • Conducts program outreach to students and liaises with faculty and staff in other academic units.

  • Approves courses to count for secondary fields in consultation with Chair and faculty standing committee.

  • Convenes and facilitates monthly Student Advisory Council (SAC) meetings.

  • Maintains Academic Advising Report data with the registrar’s office.

  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises graduate student thesis mentors, interns, and student working group coordinators

  • Co-supervises working group coordinators and interns with the Academic Programs Coordinator.

  • Coordinates everyday aspects of non-ladder faculty teaching and program engagement (curriculum design and implementation in consultation with Chair and Standing Committee, support for non-ladder faculty in course topics and development).

  • Acts as an advising resource for faculty and other academics regarding educational strategies and formats. Provides pedagogical training for new faculty. Advises faculty on academic questions, such as best practices for syllabi and grading, concerns in classroom.

  • Assists Chair with annual review and reappointment processes.

  • Organizes trainings and with Chair manages personnel issues related to climate, DEI, and accessibility for faculty.

  • Helps to recruit and onboard teaching fellows, and to mediate issues that arise between head instructors and TFs.

  • Recruits juries, processes data, and manages decision-making stages for Summer Thesis Research Grant and Thesis Prize competitions.

  • Collaborates with staff coordinators in ongoing review of awards processes, working group management, co-curricular initiatives (e.g., EMR Scholars seminars), and program messaging across the university.

  • Manages course development which may include recommendation and implementation of course sequencing, scheduling, grading processes and exam sessions; reviews program goals, policy, curriculum, and program requirements and makes recommendations for improvement.

  • Researches, resolves, and provides accurate policy guidance to faculty, other academic workers, and Academic Programs Coordinator; ensures compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
