Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common genetic hematological disorder, accounting for over 305000 births in 2010, with millions of people currently affected across the globe, the majority in low and middle income countries. The condition can cause extreme pain, life-threatening infections and other complications such as stroke or loss of vision. The disease can interfere with many aspects of the patient’s life, including education, employment and psychosocial development resulting in significant socio-economic impact.

The Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on leveraging the breadth of innovation and novel modalities in the development of breakthrough therapies for patients. The exploratory Disease Area X (DAx) department at NIBR is looking for a highly motivated PhD-level Principal Scientist to develop innovative, transformative, in vivo therapies for Sickle Cell Disease. DAx is a highly dynamic and collaborative drug discovery department that interfaces innovative biology, genetic engineering, gene and cell therapy platforms, genome analysis, different modalities with pre-clinical development and translational medicine.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Will assume a crucial role in the development of novel therapeutic concepts and will contribute at all stages of a project, from inception, early project validation, optimization, candidate selection and through to early clinical development of novel medicines for patients with sickle cell disease
Will work collaboratively with other specialists to develop project strategy, identify key drug discovery issues, propose and implement creative solutions, execute and guide teams to success and decision points.
Propose and explore new research directions, projects, and/or new technologies. He/she will conduct early research to develop in vivo targeted gene delivery strategies for Sickle Cell Disease

What You'll Bring to the Role:
A demonstrable record of accomplishment of driving and supporting multiple research projects, and contributions as an author to high-impact, peer-reviewed publications in the field
Will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to thrive in a dynamic matrix research environment.
Creative problem-solving skills; excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills.
Proven expertise with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Biology (HSC) biology in order to establish the in vitro and in vivo models required for establishing drug discovery programs with experience with optimizing gene delivery into HSC
Ph.D. in Cellular or Molecular Biology or Immunology. Experience in hematology is preferred together with 3 to 5 years’ experience in leading an innovative research team with a focus on gene therapy
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in gene therapy and hematologic stem cell biology in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology research setting.
