MELLON UNIVERSITY PRESS DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP/ACQUISITIONS ASSISTANT, MIT Press, to assist acquisitions editors with project management for book programs in information science, communication, internet studies, culture, and technology. Will manage distinct and critical project development phases for approximately thirty projects annually, across a range of trade books, textbooks, and professional monographs. Responsibilities include working with authors to prepare manuscripts and artwork for production; data entry; coordinating the peer review process; soliciting endorsements for forthcoming books; sending contracts/tax documents to authors and coordinating advance payments; general administrative duties; researching competing books, potential course adoptions, and areas of growth in emerging fields; developing financial projections; researching and preparing contracts/documents; representing the Press at conferences; participating in meetings; and additional duties as requested. The Mellon Fellowship seeks to increase diversity in scholarly publishing by providing fellowships in the acquisitions departments of six university presses.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: high school diploma or GED; three years’ administrative experience; commitment to using an understanding of the diversity of human experiences to develop, recruit, and market manuscripts/books; evidence of academic achievement in fields corresponding to the major lists of participating publishers or are relevant to diversity; commitment to pursuing a career in academic publishing; sustained personal engagement with low income communities and/or communities within the U.S. that are underrepresented in publishing, preferably bringing the understandings gleaned from such engagement to the daily work of academic publishing; excellent organizational and communication skills; strong computer skills (Word, FileMaker, Excel, PowerPoint); discretion with confidential information/issues; attention to detail; self-motivation; and ability to coordinate/prioritize multiple tasks, effectively manage time, and work in teams. Travel to conferences is required. This is a fourteen-month, entry-level position.
