    Job Description

LABOR RELATIONS SPECIALIST, Human Resources (HR)-Labor Relations, to assist the manager of labor relations with the administration and interpretation of MIT’s seven collective bargaining agreements. Responsibilities include guiding DLC (departments, labs, and centers) managers/supervisors concerning contract compliance and other issues related to supervising union personnel and conflict resolution; helping/advising managers/supervisors on addressing step I, II, and III grievances, conferring with labor and management representatives to resolve employee disputes; working with managers/supervisors to collect documentation/data for responding to union information requests and producing reports; attending joint labor-management meetings, contract negotiations, impact bargaining sessions, arbitrations, etc., recording notes and following up on action items; developing/maintaining understanding of applicable collective bargaining and associated agreements, department policies, and MIT employment policies in order to advise managers about contract compliance; working with HR colleagues and DLCs on the posting and bidding process for union positions, including updating job postings, ensuring compliance with posting requirements, reviewing applicants, and monitoring the process; helping develop and schedule (and possibly conducting) training programs for supervisors/managers; drafting communications; and performing other duties as requested.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree in HR management, labor relations, or other business-related discipline; five years’ experience either advising management on the supervision of unionized employees or with the labor relations process on behalf of either labor or management; ability to conduct hearings, determine relevant facts, analyze facts in relation to contract language/practices, and write clear responses to union contract grievances; strong organizational and oral and written communication skills; and proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, databases (including FileMaker Pro), and conducting internet searches. PREFERRED: advanced degree or JD and familiarity with the academic workforce.
