  • High School diploma or equivalent, completion of an apprenticeship in instrumentation repair and maintenance or equivalent with a minimum of five years direct experience in instrument maintenance and repair work in a utility/plant environment, specifically including responsibility for environmental compliance equipment/systems.

  • Valid State driver's license required. Driving history must meet University Operations Services standards.

  • Must have, or successfully obtain within 6 months of hiring, EPA CFC certification (universal). May be required to work overtime and/or other schedules, as needed. May be required to operate cranes, forklifts (and/or similar machinery), or lifting devices.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Requires in-depth knowledge of principles and techniques of repairing and maintaining utility/plant instrumentation, principles of combustion and control, and industrial process control; purpose and operation of instruments; equipment, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing instruments; electrical and electronic theory; pneumatic theory; and mathematics as required to perform responsibilities of the position, including algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.

  • Must be safety conscious, have a fair degree of mechanical ability, and have in-depth working knowledge of power plants.

  • Must possess a high degree of professionalism and the ability to work well independently and effectively with others.

  • Must be detail oriented and have a good safety record, and the ability to take and follow directions intelligently.

  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively.

  • An ongoing willingness to acquire new skills and utilize technology to streamline processes and problem solve is essential.

  • Familiarity with database, spreadsheet, email, and word processing software is helpful.

  • Required to use desktop and laptop computers for diagnostic work.

  • Familiarity with the use and interpretation of diagnostic systems and software required.

  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) systems preferred (training will be provided as needed).

  • Proficiency in PLCs, control systems/equipment, data acquisition systems, metering devices/systems, etc. required.

  • Required to interface with/utilize control systems and computerized asset/maintenance management systems.

  • Under the supervision of the Utility Plant Maintenance Supervisor, is responsible for performing maintenance of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical instrumentation and the maintenance and operation of control, compliance, and data acquisition instrumentation and systems associated with plant operations and the production/distribution of utilities. Communicates regularly with the Utility Plant supervisors and managers; uses judgment and takes action in order to safely maintain compliance and operations.

  • Functions as the in-house expert in all environmental monitoring systems, instrumentation, metering equipment, and data acquisition and/or control systems.

  • Performs daily calibration drift evaluation, and instrumentation check on CEMS. Participates in preparing quarterly QA/QC audits and reports and assists with and/or conducts yearly Nox RACT testing. Performs preventive maintenance on all instrumentation, process monitoring and control equipment, and associated equipment/systems. Maintains process analyzers, lab, and CEMS equipment. Takes corrective action when needed.

  • Participates in periodic audit program for plant equipment and environmental monitoring systems (e.g. stack/CEMS, fuel/fuel delivery, and wastewater systems). Must participate in sampling programs as required to verify plant or environmental performance. Conducts audits of systems as needed to meet regulatory requirements, as well as operational requirements.

  • Designs, fabricates, installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains instruments and control systems and/or components associated with monitoring, control, compliance, data acquisition, metering, and other activities associated with utility production and distribution. Calibrates pneumatic, electronic, and mechanical instrumentation and control systems and their components. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs to component level various plant electronic process control and monitoring equipment/systems

  • Monitors, tests, diagnoses, calibrates, programs, and maintains plant telemetry system, pneumatic, electronic, and digital control circuits; programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and other control/data acquisition systems; and related components (e.g. fiber optic PLC network).

  • Performs skilled repair work on utility plant and utility distribution instrumentation.

  • Prepares and maintains clear and concise work records, maintenance reports, drawings, schematics and records; performs mathematical calculations related to electronics.

  • Uses desktop/laptop computers and diagnostic systems/software for diagnostic work. Diagnoses and determines effective course of action for correcting instrument and control system malfunctions.

  • Participates in emergency response training and drills. Must participate in mandatory training and other programs as required.

  • Must observe and comply with all codes and perform work in accordance with recognized industry standards; University policies, procedures, and standards; and local, state, and federal laws/requirements.

  • Assists with the design and installation of process control and monitoring equipment. Fabricates and installs field changes to existing equipment as needed. Installs new instrument systems and/or components.

  • Must be able to perform all duties in a utility/industrial plant environment that includes:

  • Exposure to loud noises, chemicals, temperature extremes, inclement weather conditions, airborne particles, vibration, hazardous materials, stairs, ladders, confined spaces, etc.

  • Requires stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, lifting, and carrying; working from ladders, scaffolds, high-lifts, and in confined spaces

  • Lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 65 pounds

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment and clothing where appropriate;

  • May be required to wear a respirator (negative pressure or equivalent) and other respiratory protection equipment up to the level of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

  • At no time is facial hair permitted

  • Required to participate in Hearing Conservation and medical surveillance programs.

Work Format:On-Site Work Format Details:This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable).
