  • 5+ years’ experience in a laboratory setting.

  • M.S. or PhD in a Materials Science or a related discipline (Applied Physics or Mechanical Engineering, etc.)

  • Experience in shared user facilities and familiarity with service contracts and maintenance of instruments also desirable.

  • Good time-management skills, and the ability to interact professionally with a wide range of users from academia and industry, including users with varying English fluency.

  • Ability to plan complex measurements involving a wide range of materials systems. Feels comfortable handling small and delicate samples.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline and at least two years of relevant work experience; OR

  • A minimum of seven years of relevant work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting (up to approximately 50 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion including repetitive motions

  • Standing and/or sitting for extended periods

Working Conditions:

  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, primary tissue, cell lines or infectious materials

  • May work in a research environment where animals are present

  • May be exposed to toxic, radioactive, or carcinogenic materials including compressed gases, acids, solvents, vacuum pump oils, and other chemicals

  • May be required to work nights and weekends

Position Description:

  • Coordinate service calls and timely repair of defective components with the goal to reduce instrument down-time and maximize Harvard researchers access. Coordinate with service engineer care of instrument (e.g., preventive maintenance measures and replacement of consumables). Order consumables for the instruments. Monitor water chiller, air pressures and other Dual Beam FIB/SEM instrument components to ensure their optimal performance.

  • Build regular schedule to align electron and ion beam column alignments to ensure optimal imaging and patterning performance (to be done weekly)

  • Maintain a clean work environment, keep instrument and area in compliance with Harvard Safety requirements and Federally mandated OSHA requirements. Support the development of teaching material (such as videos, SOPs, etc.).

  • Train users in safely handling the instruments, and in performing basic FIB tasks (such as cross-sectioning, standard sample lift-out, high-resolution imaging, EDS mapping, etc.) It would be expected that this position would train approximately 200 users per year and feed into the CNS ecosystem of independent operating users.

  • Provide advice to users unfamiliar with the FIB technique including useful experimental strategies, act as a guide or mentor to students doing FIB work. Provide prior FIB use planning and consultation with users.

  • Coordinate with users assisted use operation, plan corresponding experiments. Help users obtain data, perform experiments and provide guidance on the next steps of their research. Guide users on data analysis. Support the development of new experimental methodologies

  • Perform basic FIB operations via assisted use (as above) It would be expected that this position would be assisting more than 200+ users a year and be responsible for supporting a large proportion of the Dual-Beam FIB user base at CNS.
