About Us: The Department of Epidemiology, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, studies the frequency, distribution, and determinants of disease in humans, a fundamental science of public health. In addition to pursuing ground-breaking global research initiatives, we educate and prepare future medical leaders and practitioners as part of our mission to ignite positive changes in the quality of health across the world.

The Initiative on Health, Spirituality, and Religion at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard Medical School aims to be a research catalyst for an integrated model of spirituality, public health, and patient care, one that fosters collaboration across Harvard University, and dialogue with spiritual communities. In light of the separation between body and soul within contemporary healthcare, the Initiative upholds stringent scientific and social-scientific methods of analysis, followed by interdisciplinary teams of empirical researchers, scholars, and theologians, based within a line of inquiry that seeks an understanding of spirit, mind, and body. The program is oriented around the question: “How may religion and spirituality in concert with public health and the practice of medicine alleviate illness and promote human well-being?”

This is a cross-institutional initiative that brings together faculty from across Harvard to study and implement ways to better integrate religion and spirituality into the practice of medicine and public health. The initiative began through a synergistic, research-focused relationship of a trio of medical, epidemiological, & theological faculty at Harvard University. Today, the initiative seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and bridge-building beginning with other Harvard faculty and students. The initiative values interfaculty teams of researchers who apply stringent scientific methods of analysis and scholarly lines of inquiry seeking to discover individual and social connections of spirit, mind, and body within the healthcare context. The advancement of spirituality research is energized by the practical concern that new discoveries from spiritual and religious resources will yield significant new gains in alleviating illness and promoting human flourishing.
