  • Master Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred

  • Experience with a version control system, particularly git

  • Experience with high-performance computing and clusters a plus

  • Experience with Python, R or similar scripting language preferred

  • Experience using Matlab/R/Excel/Python for statistical analysis on fairly large data (gigabytes) preferred

  • Knowledge of basic statistical concepts such as common distributions and their associated likelihoods preferred

  • Experience writing clear and accurate documentation, as well as comprehensive commenting and cataloguing of new code and protocols preferred   

  • Effectively explains technical concepts to a non-technical audience preferred

  • Interest in public health and infectious disease or HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention a plus

  • Some biology knowledge a plus

  • Works well independently and collaboratively as a team preferred

  • Willingness to learn new techniques very encouraged

  • Oversee software development and enhancements

  • Utilize existing agent based-models as base to compile and run the models, and make new methodological improvements

  • Add new features and maintain/refine existing C++ code for accuracy and performance

  • Write and use scripts in Python or R for creating model inputs as well as processing data generated by the model

  • Utilize modern epidemiology research to guide model development

  • Deploy and run the model on very large computing clusters

  • Create useful visualizations of disease transmission to both understand the functioning of the model and better understand how the disease spreads through real and simulated populations

  • Assist with updating protocol for running simulations, including the GitHub repository for software

  • Translate scientific requirements into software and work with the team to ensure that code is working as intended

  • Organize, manage, and analyze large data sourced from publicly-available datasets or publications/reports

  • Identify new data sources to use as inputs for analyses

  • Coordinate the transfer into existing input files using python script and design scripts for output of simulation data

  • Collaborate with other on the team on methodological research and analytical objectives

  • Assist investigators with analyses, including but not limited to: creating graphs, summarizing results, and preparing manuscripts

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

The lab of Professor George R. Seage III is seeking a highly motivated and talented full-time Computational Engineer to join the research team for a new research project called "Modeling the role of PrEP in Getting to Zero". The project aims to investigate and evaluate the use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing new cases of HIV in the US. This project involves the development of a sophisticated agent-based simulation model for estimating the impact of specific HIV prevention strategies and PrEP use.

The Computational Engineer will develop the software necessary for advancement of the simulation model and analytic tools for achieving the research aims. Talented engineers/programmers are encouraged to apply, especially those with interest in epidemiologic modeling, network analysis, and public health generally. The study team will reside in the lab of Professor George R Seage III, under supervision and mentorship from the lead study investigators, Dr. Dan Escudero and Dr. Seage.
