The Clinical Pharmacy Manager oversees the management, quality and advancement of clinical pharmacy services at Mount Auburn Hospital. Provides a broad base of clinical leadership that directly and indirectly influences optimal medication management. The individual in this position is responsible for overseeing the establishment, implementation, enhancement, and maintenance of a patient-centered clinical pharmacy programs. This individual will ensure clinical programs are effective and safe and will provide pharmacy staff with the necessary resources and education to operationalize a robust, patient-centered, and cost-effective clinical pharmacy program. The individual will lead formulary management and stewardship, while serving as a key member of the MAH Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Provides support to the organization’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee and other pertinent hospital committees. Additionally, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager will coordinate the Pharmacy Residency Program, acting in the role of Residency Program Director.

Job Description:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises decentralized clinical pharmacy staff.

  • Manages decentralized pharmacy practice of clinical pharmacists assuring quality provision of pharmacotherapy services.

  • Oversees assigned staff. Ensures that job descriptions are accurate and up to date; responsible for timely completion of performance appraisals and competency assessment.

  • Ensures coordination of efforts and expansion of services amongst clinical pharmacy specialties through maintaining regular staff meetings and communication between specialists

  • Identifies, creates and implements clinical pharmacy programs for both short- and long-term goals, in coordination with pharmacy leadership and with alignment to MAH and BILH clinical goals.

  • Responsible for development, implementation, administration, and quality assessment of new pharmacy policies and procedures related to clinical programs in collaboration with the senior pharmacy leadership.

  • Directly responsible for overseeing the activities of the Colleges of Pharmacy preceptors and faculty.

  • Acts as Residency Program Director for the Pharmacy Residency Program. Responsible for maintaining ASHP accreditation of the program, chairing the Residency Advisory Committee, orienting and supervising residents, leading preceptor development initiatives, and conducting formal precepting evaluations.

  • Provides and coordinates drug and clinical information to other healthcare professionals in response to specific questions relating to new evolving issues related to the care of patients. Provides professional education regarding new drugs, biologics, or technologies for specialized drug delivery. Provides a significant level of education to other health care professionals, or trainees, and patients. Responsible for monitoring and assessing performance of the Pharmacy student learner and providing feedback using appropriate learning objectives that are aligned with the desired learning outcomes.

  • Provides visual, spoken, and written clinical education and training to pharmacy students, pharmacists, clinical pharmacists, and residents in the Department of Pharmacy.

  • Participates in the development and maintenance of the Department of Pharmacy strategic plan and initiatives.

  • Measures patient outcome data for department initiatives that are in accordance with accreditation standards and national best practices.

  • Participates in the development and maintenance of quality improvement plans for the pharmacy department

  • Coordinates Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee including setting agenda and writing minutes.

  • Participates in departmental meetings. Demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement with suggestions for improving service.

  • Participates as needed on the BILH P&T Committee and sub-committees and works closely with system and local committees to successfully implement approved policies, procedures, guides and programs. Collaborates with other clinicians and allied health professionals within BILH to develop practice standards and therapeutic algorithms.

  • Reviews and accurately interprets physicians orders checking for appropriateness of orders as to indication, clarity, accuracy of dose, drug allergy, potential drug interactions and duplication (two or more drugs with the same therapeutic action). Contacts physician or nurse when necessary to prevent any problems or potential problems with the order. Document the intervention and outcome.

  • Must possess sufficient professional knowledge, organizational and related skills in order to meet the standards of the department.

  • Provides accurate, appropriate and timely drug information utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, reference books and scientific literature.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Pharmacy Laws, regulations and professional standards by keeping appropriate records (i.e., accurately maintains the Pharmacy Department perpetual inventory for controlled drugs). Accurately anticipates controlled drug needs of each patient care area based on completed Controlled Drug Disposition Record.

  • All work performed by Pharmacy Technicians is verified and is complete and accurate prior to dispensing.

  • Accepts special assignments and instructions from supervisor willingly. Routinely volunteers for special assignments/ Completion of at least one special project required for an “exceeds standard” rating.

  • Must demonstrate ability to work independently as well as with others. Supports teamwork concept. Demonstrates pride in self and workplace.

  • Handles stressful situations in a professional manner. Seek administrative assistance when appropriate to ensure project completion.

  • Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for all aspects of professional practice.

  • Coordinates Continuing Education Activities for Staff.

  • Assists in competency assessment and development for Pharmacists and Technicians.

  • Staffs as a Pharmacist on an occasional basis. This may include weekend or evenings and occasionally a holiday.

  • Appearance is always neat. Observes department dress code.

  • Practice reflects philosophy, core values and mission statement of hospital.

  • Assists in writing and implementing Policies and Procedures.

  • Performs other work duties as assigned by the director.

Required Qualifications

  • PGY1 Residency or equivalent experience in a hospital practice

  • At least 5 years of work experience in a hospital setting as a clinical pharmacist

  • Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy , and/or Critical Care, Cardiology, or Infectious Disease

  • Graduate of accredited school of Pharmacy and Licensed to practice Pharmacy in Massachusetts

  • Requires independent decision-making, clinical judgment, and in-depth knowledge of therapeutics

  • Must be able to perform all functions of the Registered Pharmacist

  • Utilize pharmacy computer systems accurately and efficiently

  • Participate in training pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, and pharmacists
