  • A minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience,

  • A record of effectively developing programs from concept through design, development, and implementation,

  • Effective communication, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly and concisely share information and ideas with a range of audiences,

  • Position requires an in-person presence several days per week, and every day during certain key programming weeks in every SEL program cycle,

  • Position requires occasional evening and weekend hours.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Strong preference for Bachelor’s degree in education, science or a related field,

  • Master’s degree preferred (in Education, science or a related field),

  • Experience in supporting and mentoring undergraduate students,

  • Middle school or high school STEM education or equivalent experience,

  • Demonstrated ability to manage others effectively,

  • Experience with community outreach and partnership development,

  • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating educational curriculum supporting professional development for undergraduate and graduate students,

  • Experience in developing relationships with higher ed faculty,

  • An ability to work independently and as part of a team,

  • Bi-lingual a plus, Spanish, Portuguese preferred.

  • Create and oversee undergraduate and graduate student programs that:

  • provide students with a sense of belonging at HEP and a clear understanding of their role as Harvard ambassadors in the community,

  • engage students in practices related to good teaching, proactive communication and leadership,

  • create partnerships with campus departments which value the practices of teaching and mentoring, support K-12 education, and appreciate the Ed Portal’s unique ability to provide Harvard students with well-supported hands-on experiences in educational and public settings,

  • meet the needs of the community and non-profit partners,

  • support HEP program areas with Harvard student placement and oversight requirements within those programs,

  • set appropriate program participation requirements

  • Direct and manage the experience of all undergraduate and graduate students working at the HEP, overseeing:

  • the campus visibility of the program, and recruitment, hiring and onboarding of students,

  • communication with students and cohort/community building, including overseeing weekly cohort meetings with the undergraduates,

  • student training in pedagogy, and support and feedback on classroom or mentoring delivery through 1:1 and group meetings, workshops, and retreats,

  • monthly meetings with graduate students and job placement supports,

  • development and management of the Ed Portal’s student employment policies and procedures.

  • the delivery of pedagogical training and supports to graduate student, post-doc or staff laboratory internship supervisors partnering with HEP program areas.

  • Responsible for developing, overseeing, and executing youth programs at the HEP.

  • Support and guide the Mentoring Coordinator in the day-to-day execution of Youth Programs located at the HEP and community organizations.

  • Manage the graduate student team working with the undergraduates.

  • Develop programs for fall, spring, and summer semesters,

  • Develop, review and/or modify policies that pertain to minors, and their use of HEP materials and equipment in the youth programming space.

  • Serve as science education lead in conversations across the university related to supporting K-12 (and predominantly high school) science initiatives at the Harvard Ed Portal, including,

  • Raising visibility of HEP STEM programs and opportunities for University departments to participate in K-12 STEM education outreach.

  • Science curriculum co-development and review.

  • Consult with and track faculty requests for feedback on broader impacts proposals and, where appropriate, connect faculty with HEP program staff for possible collaborations. This work will be done in partnership with the AD for Public School Partnerships.

  • Staff Management and Administration and Communication Responsibilities

  • Manage the work of the Mentoring Coordinator,

  • Develop and track annual budgets, overseeing spending and correct item coding.

  • Oversee data collection and evaluation of SEL programs, to support SEL and Youth Programming reporting requirements.

  • Serve as a representative for the Ed Portal at community meetings, internal meetings, and with other identified internal and external stakeholders and on department-wide/university-wide/city wide initiatives,

  • Program Communication

  • Attend and staff SEL events at HEP,

  • Work with the HPAC communications team to identify opportunities to highlight SEL programs, internally and with external organizations.

  • Other duties as needed or required; this role works across HPAC teams and functions to integrate activities, tools and information in service to broaden overall departmental priorities.

This individual oversees programming that supports the personal growth and academic experience of Harvard students who serve the surrounding community through Ed Portal programming. The Assistant Director for SEL creates opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students to work in the community in ways that foster their development as communicators, mentors, educators and professionals while meeting the needs of the community organization.

In addition, the Assistant Director for SEL is responsible for cultivating campus relationships with individuals, faculty and staff, and departments whose missions support education, science research or the Harvard student experience and that align with SEL or other HEP programs. This position oversees the work of the Mentoring Coordinator, works closely with the other members of the Ed Portal team, and reports to the Director of Community Programming.

The Harvard Education Portal (HEP) is a collaborative partnership involving Harvard University, the City of Boston, the Harvard Allston Task Force, and the Allston-Brighton community. The Ed Portal is the Allston-Brighton community’s front door to Harvard’s educational, arts, wellness, and workforce and economic development programs. The Assistant Director works closely with each project team to create learning opportunities for Harvard students.
