The individual must be capable of driving a portfolio of
projects while fostering a culture of inclusion centered on education and participation. The preferred candidate will likely have served a portion of their career in an academic setting as well as having been a leader in a research-oriented healthcare system or a growth-oriented biotechnology or biopharmaceutical company.
The successful candidate must have:
A Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree with a strong data science or informatics background
Expertise in data science and data science methods and analytical tools and a keen understanding of the current state of the art and competitive landscape
Expertise in biomedical and healthcare data, data standards, and data quality across a broad array of biomedical domains
Strong leadership and a track record of hiring, managing and developing scientific and managerial talent
Demonstrated decisiveness, creativity, and pronounced collaborative leadership abilities
Minimum of ten years progressive and relevant work experience in data science or informatics innovation, and clinical and translational processes
Additional Qualifications:Ability to evangelize the broader vision to internal and external parties
Hands-On orientation and willingness and ability to be intimately involved in the day-to-day scientific and partnership activities of the Center
A significant network of leaders in academia, healthcare, and industry for recruiting, partnerships and collaborations
The ability to create a network of trusted partners for data-based collaborations that honor the interests of all parties
Ability to build a nascent research and development framework to ensure that milestones and objectives are met on a personal level, the position requires energy and enthusiasm, mature business judgment, an elevated work ethic, personal warmth, and rich imagination. The Harvard Medical School is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.Department:Biomedical InformaticsPre-Employment Screening:Credit, Criminal, Education, IdentityJob Function:General Administration Duties & Responsibilities:HMS is seeking a founding Executive Director of the Center for Computational Biomedicine to provide leadership for this next, critical, stage of the evolution of data science across the Medical School. Reporting jointly to Dean George Daley and a Steering Committee of HMS faculty and institutional leaders, the Executive Director will be responsible for setting and executing the scientific vision for computational biomedicine across HMS. This person will be leading the development of computational biomedicine research programs and research teams in collaboration with HMS faculty, data-driven research partnerships with our affiliate hospitals and other Harvard schools, entrepreneurial relationships with industry, and operational integration with the Information Technology program responsible for infrastructure and IT services. The Executive Director will be responsible for directing Center data science research staff, project data curation, and domain-specific science. They will also be the primary driver, in partnership with HMS faculty, of requirements for information technology services.
The Executive Director will be a “visionary” who can bring significant data science research, clinical care, and industry leadership experience and a track record of advancing programs from discovery through clinical application and commercialization. Working in concert with the Dean of the Medical School and the other Center leaders, this individual will set overall priorities and objectives and budgets needed to carry out the Center’s goals. They will assemble a team that effectively partners with a broad array of internal and external groups and organizations. Importantly, this individual will serve as a visible, external face of the Center and represent the capabilities and scientific output to strategic partners, collaborators, and investors. In summary, the Executive Director will be instrumental in helping to develop the Center and foster a culture dedicated to innovation, collaboration, scientific discovery, professional development, entrepreneurialism, and service to humanity. More specifically, this person will oversee, create and manage an organization whose objective is to develop an organizational system that will accelerate computational biomedicine efforts across HMS.
The primary duties and responsibilities for the Executive Director include:
Shaping research, partnership, and entrepreneurial strategy with strong scientific and industry rationale, ensuring that a disciplined strategy is in place
Being a partner for attracting, educating and retaining staff and faculty as participants in this novel effort
Coordinating data science research programs from inception through conceptualization, partnership development, funding, execution, and dissemination and outreach in close partnership with HMS faculty across all departments
Creating an environment of trusted data sharing across HMS and with partners for the purposes of advancing research and therapeutic development
Leading and building research and clinical data science partnerships in a highly matrixed and dynamic environment
Working in collaboration with Harvard’s Office of Technology Development to assist in the initiation and execution of strategic partnerships and licensing deals with relevant companies
Overseeing all scientific marketing, including “selling” the vision of the Center to potential partners and investors and serving as the scientific “face” of the organization
Creating and tracking Center measures of success
Presenting to and interacting regularly with the Dean of HMS and serving as a collaborative thought partner for the entire senior leadership team of the Center
