Job Description:

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Perfusionist. The Staff Perfusionist is responsible for the safety and treatment of patients needing extracorporeal circulation. Duties include, but are not limited to: Working as clinical perfusionist, Intraoperative Blood Salvage, ECMO, VADS, completing satisfactory performance appraisals and competency assessments, clinical education and completing departmental projects in a timely manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Under the direct supervision of department leadership actively ensures adequate coverage for all cardiac surgical and cell saving procedures

  • Call (30-minute radius) and additional services outside normal working hours

  • Complete the Pre-bypass checklist prior to cardiopulmonary bypass to ensure that the appropriate resources are available and in satisfactory condition for the surgery.

  • Review the patient’s chart prior to surgery to better anticipate peri-operative and post-operative problems.

  • At the discretion of the surgeon initiates and terminates extracorporeal circulation.

During bypass surgery:

  • Employs safety devices, such as an air bubble detector, low level alarms.

  • Maintains an appropriate blood flow according to protocol.

  • Administers cardioplegia solutions as prescribed by surgeon.

  • Maintains an appropriate blood pressure.

  • Monitors operating volume in extracorporeal circuits and keeps at safe level.

  • Administers medication, blood products, anesthetic agents, or intravenous solutions.

  • Maintains an appropriate gas exchange according to established protocol.

  • Regulates the patient’s body temperature as prescribed by surgeon.

  • Monitors and maintains proper anticoagulation status of the patient according to established protocol.

  • Operates the Intra-Operative Blood Salvage equipment.

  • Calculate projected flow rates, medication doses, and assess the need for blood replacement in accordance with each patient’s physical condition and hospital protocol.

  • Monitors and maintains ECMO and MCS Devices and assists with implantation.

  • Provides POC testing as appropriate and complies with all CLIA and CAP guidelines.

  • As a member of the liver transplant team, performs veno-veno bypass, auto-transfusion and rapid infusion.

  • Expected to develop strong collaborative relationships with physicians, AP staff, ECMO teams and healthcare Professionals.

  • Assist in the development of a culture that drives quality, patient safety, intra-department teambuilding, interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.

  • Provides support to actively working staff.

  • Maintains the expected level of professionalism in the department, hospital and healthcare system.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred. Graduate of an accredited perfusion program

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certified, or certification eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Licensed, or licensure eligible in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, physicians, management and operating room personnel.

  • Ability to make independent judgements to resolve complex problems.

Experience

Cardiopulmonary bypass and cardio pulmonary support devices, intra-aortic balloon pump, ventricular assist devices, blood salvage and conservation equipment, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support (MCS). Proficient computer knowledge to assist with the needs of the department.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor degree required; Master’s Degree preferred. Graduate of an accredited perfusion program.

Experience

A certified clinical perfusionist or a new graduate from an accredited perfusion program who is eligible for the national ABCP certification

License and/or Registration

Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or Eligible Massachusetts State Perfusion License or Eligible
