Your Opportunity

We have an Environmental Scientist opportunity available in Massachusetts. You will perform technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, corrective action, and other environmental programs. Will be required to write reports, develop plans, and implement steps to move projects toward closure in the most cost-effective manner.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and document field data collection activities (including oversight of subcontractors); assist in the completion of project level work (data management, report preparation) on environmental remediation/management projects for commercial/industrial clients.

  • Conduct multi-media sampling (soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, indoor air, etc.).

  • Oversee advancement of soil and rock borings, installation of groundwater monitoring wells, manage subcontractors.

  • Prepare soil boring log and well construction diagrams.

  • Perform operation and maintenance on remediation systems; significant decisions and deliverables reviewed by higher level staff.

  • Learn and follow standard operating procedures for work assigned, while continuing to develop skills.

  • Demonstrate ability to analyze field and technical data, and draft technical reports.

  • Complete applicable company and client required health & safety training (including OSHA required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.

  • Follows established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete routine assignments.

  • This position works as part of a larger natural resources team and will likely require support to multiple Stantec offices.

  • A willingness to travel within New England is preferred.

  • Candidates will also likely be requested to support other service areas related to environmental assessment and remediation projects.

  • Complete site inspections, Phase 1 Site Assessments, and compliance audit support.

  • Complete aquifer testing, water level measurements, and elevation surveying.

  • Additional duties will include:

    • Data management, writing and preparing of reports, work plans, letters, and memoranda,
    • Preparing cost estimates,
    • Conducting project-related research (historical data, regulations, etc.),
    • Preparing periodic status/program reports

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Working understanding of policies and procedures for health, safety, security, and environmental protection (HSSE), including client-specific training (as required).

  • Current 40-Hour OSHA Hazwoper training required.

  • Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.

  • Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work and flexibility in undertaking work assignments and work independently for long hours in the field as necessary.

  • Experience/knowledge of hazardous materials.

  • Experience with environmental regulations, including the Massachusetts Contingency Plan.

  • Excellent writing skills and verbal communication skills.

  • Initiative in integrating creativity and innovation in all work tasks.

  • A strong attention to detail.

  • Conscientious, organized, and disciplined.

  • Open minded and curious; an ability to focus on possibilities, not preconceived solutions.

  • Ability to build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships within the technical team and Business Center.

  • Knowledge of use of field equipment, GIS-related mobile data collection, reporting software (e.g., Parcel) and GINT for borehole logs is an asset.

  • Working knowledge of GIS and/or CADD preferred.

  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related degree.

  • Minimum of 4-6 years’ work experience.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
